I wonder if anyone has any statistics, or just guesses on what % of the sales go unreported.

Do you think they are usually bigger sales and might affect the industry and prices considerably if people knew?

I know about 75% of my deals are behind the scenes..the only person that anything gets reported to it is uncle sam...and thats only the dollars...many people prefer to keep deals private and on this forum on any given day there are tens of thousands of dollars changing hands as we speak ;)

True.. I think close to 100% of my deals here are unreported, but I wonder what is the global % and if these deals are in the market price level or usually higher :)

A report in USA Today states that known sales of 5,851 domain names generated $29 million in 2005, compared with known sales of 3,813 names for $15 million in 2004. Like the tip of an iceberg, the number of reported sales is estimated to be 5-10% of the broader secondary domain resale market.

for your unreported sales, do people just contact you out of the blue, or are you marketing your domains to end users? do the buyers usually ask for a NDA?

NDAs normally aren't used. You need to actively sell if you want to make money, you cant just park them at Sedo and let the offers roll in.

What do you mean by "actively sell"?

Contact potential buyers? Use google adwords? Domain forums?

From experience, almost all BIG $ sales come from them contacting you

I concur!
Even in my short time in this business it is very clear that quality products generally sell themselves - all the owner need to do is tune their negotiation skills and instinct.
A few good sales can bolster the balance sheets.

Agree. Everything I've heard says reported sales are under 20% of the total market.

I'd have to say far less than 5%.
I think only 2 or so of my sales over the past 8 years have been "reported".
Not sure how many that I have purchased have been reported though.
