For the Americans (myself included) 500g is about 17.5 ounces or 1 pound & 1.5 ounces. I'm sure we'll only be able to do a one pound bag. I am shopping tonight so I will check but I think it is $2.00 USD. Damn we're expensive.

Interesting what different places use to check food prices, here it's normally a gallon of milk ($3.50 - $4.00), a loaf of bread ($2) or a dozen large eggs ($2.00-$2.50) (prices are for generic / no frills brands, higher brands will cost more).

Edit: I am also in a metropolitan area (city) so prices here will be higher than the norm, plus other areas are more expensive than here (I'm in Fort Lauderdale, FL, areas like Los Angeles and New York City will be more expensive).

Sri Lanka rice prices varies between 0.60 to 1.50 USD depending on the type.

Here 450g powdered milk would be 3 USD and 1 leter of fresh milk would be 1 USD I think

A dozen of eggs would be 1.20 USD

Full chicken is around 4 USD

.

I was way off. I could only find two pound bags of rice at first and they were about $1.50 (long grain white rice, generic brand).

It took some searching but I finally found a one pound generic brand of long grain white rice for $0.80 US.

One dozen of large grade A eggs, $2 US

One half gallon of 2% milk - $2.55 one gallon jugs were about $4.39 US.

I didn't check the bread.

On a side note, thin cut chicken cutlets were $2.99 a pound (normally $3.99-$3.49 a pound). I'm going to make a lot of chicken jerky this weekend!
