http://www.thedomains.com/2009/10/0...n-sheridan-buys-rss-com-from-sedo-for-137500/

1 October 2009

by MHB

Ron Sheridan, formerly with Oversee.net, announced today that he has completed the purchase of the domain name RSS.com for $137,500, including commission, from Sedo.com.

The asking price of the domain, RSS.com which I believe was as high as $750K, was dropped to $250K on July 10, 2009 and then to $125K on September 14, 2009.

Ron Sheridan says that he, along with Phil McKegney, plan on developing the domain, and while they are “not prepared to reveal the precise nature of what we will soon be launching, it will but safe to say it will have a heck of a lot to do with RSS feeds.”

“In the end RSS.com will be what I refer to as a logical build out for a high value premium generic domain. Our hope is that the property/brand will dominate it’s respective category.”" said Mr. Sheridan.

I think this was a great acquisition for Ron and wish him the best of luck with it. It certainly is a category killer domain priced well at just inside the six figures.

This is another very good domain that has sold recently in the $100k-$500K range and we are now running a poll on the right hand side of the blog, asking you what the best purchase has been, so please cast your vote.

As a side note, as someone who gets e-mails from Sedo.com about domains it is brokering on a pretty regular basis, I always assumed the “asking price” was the gross price, out of which the seller would pay the commission, however appearently that is not always the case, so be forewarned.

Great news! I have been watching the price drops on that one and I feel that the buyer got a pretty decent deal for a superb short-domain. Best of luck to the new owner!

It's all a matter of ROI. If the seller bought the name at $75k it's not that great of a deal.

Agreed, and I feel that they probably did turn a profit, otherwise they probably wouldn't have dropped the price so often. I imagine all parties are quite satisfied.

Decent sale though I wonder how long it will be until something else replaces rss.

Nice buy, if they build some kind of RSS aggregator site, and slip some advertising into every fifth post or something, it could do well done right. One place to get rss feeds from all kinds of subjects.

For the seller it is all about roi.

If I bought it for 75k and sold it for 123 or what everclose...that is not a great sale IMO for this name. If I bought it at 20k...I am very happy....but still knowing it will sell at mid to high 6 figs at somepoint.

i'm not sure predicting rss will be replaced by another technology is a very rational thought. rss has become an integral tool for publishers and marketers and seo to the point where i don't see it disappearing anytime soon.

If I were a seller and I bought it for $1 and made $62,500, is it not a good deal? The only difference than the stated scenario where you buy it for $75K and sell it at the stated sale price, is the risk the seller carried to make the investment. In the end, cash is cash. The seller made a nice profit. Maybe not as nice as the seller would have liked, but that will buy a lot of other investments, or frivolities.

On the buying side of the table, I think Ron got a great deal, too.

The numbers I posted are hypothetical. The margin isn't always indicative of a good sale. For a prior asking price of $750,000 the drop is tremendous.

great name and great pick up. I'll be interested to see the developed site when up and running.
