I have been in this business for a while. Over time it seems like I have tried just about every sale strategy possible and talked to a lot of sales gurus. Most strategies were not very successful. However....

I have recently found the best approach for domain sales is to be VERY active in selling the names. For one particular domain, I may target 50+ companies and send them a very short email.

I would be like to hear the successful approaches other members have found....

email the people who have the other weaker extensions. if you have the dot com contact all the others, if you have the .net contact the .org .biz and .info but not the dot com (avoid possible dispute plus someone who already has the dot com isn't likely to be interested in .org etc)

I direct my names to a page that says they are for sale. I have sold about 170 names over the last 2 years. . .

Works for me :D

On the topic of active marketing...

How successful have people been calling up potential buyers (as opposed to just emailing them)?

You are absolutely right - that is a great strategy. I know people who have found it successful. I only wish I knew about it earlier before blowing a lot of money, ha ha ha.

Your sales # is unbelievable. You must have figure out what makes for a valuable domain. At the end of the day this business is only about two things: determining/acquiring valuable domains and selling them.

Are you including sales on ebay?

I have never tried calling as it takes up a lot more time both for me and for the company I am contacting. With email, people can respond faster.

you are right, contacting a prospective buyer does take time for both parties, so iy is important that when you do that you speak to the decision maker of the company you are targeting and not just an assistant or PA.

By just sending and email, how many of the 50 mails get put in the deleted items box without being read.

Either way, it is important to research the companies that you are approaching to ensure that your communications go to the person who has the authority to say a straight 'yes' or 'no'

whether you use the phone, email or a sales page, listen to those that have been successful in selling names and learn from them.

At the end of the day, hard work will always pay off.

Do you send a short or long email?

Any effective ones to share?

Yes, that does include eBay sales. The only time I use eBay is when I am going to let a name expire because I no longer want it. Even if you remove the name sold via eBay (and hence CHEAP), I still have sold about 125 of them :D

I have registered some losing names over the last two years, so it is a constant process for me in terms of refining my portolio. Let the bad ones drop, keep getting new ones. In a year, see if I still think they are good. If not, off to blowout block they go!

I also like to think I have a good feel for that the market will bear. I never ask outrageous amounts for my names. I do not try to play the cat.mouse game of trying to see how much the buyer will give. I have sold names for $500 and I knew the person would have gived $1500. To me, it does not matter - as long as I get my (hopefully realisitic) asking price. . . I always look and remember my cost on a name.

You really know what you are doing. The fact is approximately 90% of domain owners (those with 10 or more domains) are losing money.

I am not kidding when I say this but you should write a book on domain selling (I know I would be the first to buy it). The reasoning is simple - thousands of domain owners are out there losing money. They are sitting on an asset that is burning a hole in their pocket. They just need the tools to be successful.....

The email format I use is only 2 sentences. The first states that I am contacting companies regarding selling the rights to the domain.

The second states that it may increase their revenue.

I really believe the shorter the better. People are beginning to grasp the importance of domains.

I provide my address and phone # at the end as contact info.

Hope that helps...
