UK Nominet (the UK registry) has completed a five year project to allow all schools to have their domain - IMO it should have taken six months.

Nominet started project in 1999 - about the same time as I was saying the crooked authorities were hiding fact that the exact same thing could be done for registered trademarks.

For some reason - it seems that Nominet and ICANN/WIPO do not want people to easily find and identify registered trademarks - gosh, I wonder why ;-)

Also - these .sch.uk domain names do not need renewing - like I suggested .reg domains need not.

Quotes:

By standardising the schools domain name format to schoolname.location.sch.uk, parents and pupils can easily find and identify a school website from the over 30,000 standard curriculum primary and secondary schools that exist across the UK.

In Scotland the project was further extended to include pre-schools and in Wales some establishments requested local language domain names alongside the English version.

Although many schools in different areas share the same or similar names, Nominet says that this domain name structure ensures every school is guaranteed a domain name regardless of the level of their Information and Communication Technology (ICT) resources.

http://www.netimperative.com/news/2004/09/23/UK_schools_domain

The project has allocated every school in England a domain name corresponding to the standard format: <school name>.<geographical area>.sch.uk. This format gives all 26000 schools a domain name that is both easily identifiable and unique. If domain names were allocated in a random way, eventually the system would break down.

Are .sch.uk domain names renewable?

No, .sch.uk domain names do not come up for renewal and as such do not expire unless a particular school closes or changes its name etc, or the domain name allocation system is changed.

I have done some research regarding the secondary school sysem in Britain a while back (well, quite a while back), mostly about LMS (Local Management of Schools) and LFM (Local Financial Management). My understanding is that even though the DNS (re-)structuring may take say 18 months or less to complete (6 months are probably just a figurative expression I must say), the actual implementation of ANY project to be delivered from LEA (Local Education Authority) needs way much more time when we take into consideration the budgeting, technology application, and other things in a decentalized management model such as school-based management. Just some quick thoughts. To be frank, I don't know if things have changed *a lot* over there. ;)

It is my understanding that LEA's are simply a large waste of money - used for a bureaucracy to take the blame - to take heat from Government when things go wrong in Education.

As things do - they mess about with the system all the time.

Only today in Sunday Telegraph: "Don't fudge' school reforms - plea"

Quote: Ministers have been urged not to "fudge" their response to the most radical plans for reforming education in more than 50 years.

I can see how this crap bureaucracy would slow things down - nevertheless, there is absolutely no other reason why making the .sch.uk SLD available to schools (and assigning domain) should take longer than six months - is there?
