I think everyones forgetting the main point of this... Regardless of were they still in business, or if the site was shit; Almost all domainers know about GreatDomains. Half the work if not more is already done for them. A new website, or new services can always be made... Very smart move in my opinion.

Greatdomains is much like a run down billboard in a very very good location.

It's also a 'great' domain name for a site selling domains.

I wonder how Sedo will use the site, maybe to give higher profile to their more premium names. Somehow they will have to integrate it with the Sedo system.

I can remember GreatDomains being around back in 2000. Isn't this the second time it's been sold?

You would think Sedo would be able to acquire a better acquisition then this. I doubt this would be there last buy though... they really need to grow or adjust their business model if they are to compete with registrars entering the aftermarket scene and all the other ensuing changes.

I am wondering what all the recent consolidation activity in the DN industry is leading up to? anyone here got ideas to share on the subject of where all this consolidation is leading or means?

Are names more valuable to own and are companies buying others for their portfolio?

Is domain buying activity on the rise and the companies want a piece of auction sites?

Very true, and back in their hay day, GreatDomains sold our $500k name....

GD was always dynamic, and SEDO - well dry is more the word - maybe it will spice things up all the way around!!!

btw - "Greatdomains is much like a run down billboard in a very very good location" is a very accurate statement - :)

I think it has to do with the fact that the industry is changing. In the future, no names will follow the traditional drop cycle, they'll all be resold by the registrars or tasted by them and held if they produce revenue. SO what we have are registrars become like parking services. So its only smart to buy now and prepare for the storm. So theoretically the big registrars will become the most powerful force as they'll be able to control all aspects of the domain. As they grow and hold, again in theory, they can wipe out a Sedo or a Snapname as those services will already be encompassed in their system. Again this is just a thought.

Thats actually the domain business in a nut shell... Its what everyone should be focused on. With the potential of this market, its only obvious that HUGE corperations are only going to try to dig there fingers in deeper and deeper. What people should be and what some are already focused on is loading up. Right now, there are LITTLE to NO limitations... Dont get use to that. Within the 5 or so years of being in this business... I have noticed very many changes, as Im sure many others have as well... those changes will become more and more significant to the overall domain business in the years to come. Nothing less then the wind in the sails. Many may say that its NOT a good thing for these people to load up... but they will soon relize that some of what they are or should be loading up on... is exactally what these corperations will be going after in the future.

LewR, belated congrats on a $500k sale.

With regards to the sale of GreatDomains.com, I have to ask WHY? Perhaps sedo wants to rebrand it and only list high value domains there?

Maybe they just bought the domain name GreatDomains.com because that's the only thing of value left :)

Thanks - the sale was back in 2000 - but you bring up 2 good points.

Either scenario works for them, but I have a feeling that the latter is more accurate. But that is stricly my personal opinion.

SEDO has an opportunity now, and the window is short. The can move on it, or allow it to grow mold.

Let's see....
