I have a hard time seeing that scam working.

I also have a hard time seeing that working... maybe this was a very individualized scam or someone who changed their mind after agreeing to buy a specific name? Otherwise most likely someone "trying" the idea but likely getting nowhere. If the first sale then gets reversed though, then you have something.
