I was considering bidding on this name at ebay, but when I checked the whois, it shows status of PENDING DELETE. I emailed the seller and asked him about it. He confirmed he no longer has control of the domain and cannot renew it. I kindly suggested he remove the auction since there's no way he can deliver the domain to the buyer. Well, so far it's still up for bid, about to end, and going for a big amount, by ebay standards.

It's a very nice domain. Whoever gets it on the drop is going to be laughing while the buyer/seller do some fighting - potentially in court.

From the seller to me....

Hello. Yes, I just recently found out that my domain name took on that status because the original registrar never informed me it was about to expire. Apparently this just happened a few days ago. The fact I wasn't informed prior and that now I can't even re-new it, is nothing different than robbery. I've had this name since 1998. Thanks for your interest and your e-mail.
Regards,

Waah, Waah, Waah - seems we've heard this song before.

Domain Name: ARTSTUDIO.COM
Registrar: CORE INTERNET COUNCIL OF REGISTRARS
Whois Server: whois.corenic.net
Referral URL: http://www.corenic.net
Name Server: DNS2.THEBOOK.COM
Name Server: REGISTRAR-HOLD1.DOMAINNAMES.NET.AU
Name Server: REGISTRAR-HOLD2.DOMAINNAMES.NET.AU
Status: PENDINGDELETE
Updated Date: 12-jul-2003
Creation Date: 01-apr-1998
Expiration Date: 31-mar-2004

That domain is dropping. I don't care what the expiration says. That sure is gonna be on P-O'ed buyer - especially if he sends him a money order/cashiers check which is the only listed way to pay for it.

This is worth watching to see what happens.

After I warned the buyer about the circumstances on this domain, he replied back later that indeed the seller could not deliver. Seller got a 'neutral' feedback by the buyer.

Now, I see the final bid for this one over at the NameWinner Insanity Palace is $5001. That is just frickin crazy.

Oh well, this one is probably just another that will be caught by BuyDomains and held hostage from people who could put it to good use for yet even more ridiculous amounts of money for years - like they do with all the other names they get.

Wow! That's a sad situation. I wonder if the seller has learned that the domain he lost for failing to pay a reg fee is pulling $5,000 bids!

I think they should change their name to that. It's kinda catchy.

Meanwhile the original owner is down at the gun store buying a .38 to put himself out of his misery.

maybe we need to put together a trade association with dues to promote the concept that it is not a sign of weakness to let a professional manage your domain & web properties. sort of like realtors do. this poor sap would have surely benefitted from the advice of someone who is on top of these things.

And I'm sure that "$5,000" in BuyDomains money is much less in real payment exchanged.

Hell, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if Namewinner kicked back money to BuyDomains for bidding names excessively high if someone else outbids them and pays real money.
