So I purchased a couple .net names, mostly LLLL.net by researching the .com version first and finding a large company that owns them. Anyone here have any success in getting the .com owners to purchase your .net? For instance, one of them is a radio station, and another one is a fairly high ranked car magazine forum. I estibotted the .com's and they mostly range in the xx,xxx range, after the traffic is calculated in. I'm really just looking for a quick flip, but not sure how likely this would happen. What are your thoughts on it.

It would make sense to try to sell the .com to the .net owner but not the other way around.

I agree with allaround...unless your original reg was before the .com (unlikely), or its a real generic, offering it to them is admitting that you know its their brand, especially if they are developed and you aren't.

Sure...why not.

I would love for you just to add to the hundreds of emails a day that I get stating...

You own the .com (net) how would you like to buy the....

.com
.net
.org
.cc
.ca
.ca.com

and so on.

99% of the time they want to sell for $149, $199, or $249 and it is actually available for reg fee.

They don't even own it.

Doubtful that if you own the domain name is going to do anything to make me read the email.

I've actually received emails asking me if I'd like to buy a domain that I already own for $299. :undecided:

Agreed. Waste of time and possible TM issues.

I sold the .org first, then the .net to the .com owner who had to have the complete set (all these were once owned by the same entity before they dropped). There is always a reason behind a domain purchase - if the price is right.

Yep, the other way around and you have a decent biz model...about 5 years ago that is...

In my experience, .com owners are the worst buyers for the .net. I tried a few times and they never showed much interest.

In my opinion there are a few reasons for that. If you are the .com owner and buy the .net you will lose the chance of somebody developing the .net and sending your some ‘free traffic’. Also, a buyer that does not have the keyword of the domain will pay a premium for that keyword for branding and SEO potential, while the owner of the .com will not.

Heck, in my experience getting a .NET owner to buy the .COM is often fruitless even if you're only asking $250! I've had people with names like GeneralRealtyInc.com turn down the the 'Inc'less version of their name as 'they already owned their real name'! A guy with something like Antique-paper.com turned down the pure version of his generic name for $100 and informed me that I was (in essence 'an evil cyber squatter -- GO AWAY!!

They either get it or they don't. If they get it, they will eventually come to you. The bad news is that most people don't have a clue!

As to the .NET, if I have the .COM, I almost never care about the .NET unless its a good generic term and its dropping. I definitely don't care if its available today in almost all cases. As to the radio station, unless its a non-com and they want the .ORG, .COM is the one and only US extension. There are only a few exceptions and that would have to be a simple and pretty generic term such as 'Oldies951.NET'. Our only .NET station here was, I suspect, consulted into having a longer .COM. They were smart enough to keep the .NET name too but they no longer promote it. I would definitely not buy .NET names for sale to specific stations on multiple levels!

Well, thanks all for your input. So far, of the 7 that I purchased, only one purchase was probable. Actually should be closing that out pretty soon, and luckily, since they were all just reg fees, this one should cover the price of purchasing all 7. I prolly won't be doing this too much more, but it was just a thought. As far as TM goes, these are mostly 4 LLLL generic's, so it's pretty hard to TM something like that, at least I would think so. The only one would prolly be the radio station, with the KK** domain, that might be a TM issue, but again, it was only $7.49, so I'm not too worried. Again, thanks for your input, I don't have too much optimism about this, but the off chance that someone is interested, should normally cover quite a few of these 'adventures.'

Radio station call signs are seldom copyrighted. They are already pretty unique for the purpose and other uses wouldn't be protected by their copyright anyway. They seldom will want the .NET. I do have a radio background, for what that is worth.

Good luck in any event and Happy New Year!

I have sold some .org domain to .com for low $x,xxx range, mostly are software/scripts companies. I also sold a .mobi to Godaddy (they own .com) for $1.5k :)
