Anybody know, SEO-wise , is it better to have a blog at

example.com/blog

or

blog.example.com ?

blog.example.com could be seen as a separate website. example.com/blog will inherit the authority of example.com while blog.example.com may or may not inherit any authority from example.com.

5. Subdomains or Sub-folders
Since search engines keep different metrics for domains than they do subdomains, it is recommended that webmasters place link-worthy content like blogs in subfolders rather than subdomains. (i.e. www.example.com/blog/ rather than blog.example.com) The notable exceptions to this are language-specific websites. (i.e., en.example.com for the English version of the website).

The Google approach is even; there is no difference between the two, however it is *recommended* to use a subfolder.

example.com/blog the way and try not to overoptimize with keyword/keyword and go with something like category/keyword

I agree with @Theo in that Google isn't going to penalize you either way. Both will work, although I think using a subfolder is more the "standard" these days.

Would recommend example.com/blog

and then keep all directories neat & ordered:

example.com/blog/
example.com/products/
example.com/contact-us/

etc.

Thanks,

agree you'll do better using example.com/blog rather than the sub-domain mostly for the reason tia gave.

Google actually did give advice on this I think about 4 months ago.
John Mueller maybe.

They said domain.com/folder/ is better than blog.domain.com

But in my opinion definely folder anyway

Not to mention you have higher dns overhead using the subdomain.

I feel like you rarely see subdomains anymore - except for the biggest head scratcher of them all .... espn.go.com
