One day I'm minding my own business and my cousin gives me a call. He wants to know what I think of a domain. I tell him the domain sounds useful. He says ok. Barely four hours later, I'm researching domains at his place. I check availability of the domain. It is taken, by someone in Denmark. I start laughing hysterically, like the Joker.
Me: I think someone took "YOUR" domain.
Cousin: What domain?
Me: -----.com. Someone registered it less than an hour ago.
For what seemed like an eternity, my cousin gave me a hard look. I'm still laughing. I know it is cruel but I can't stop.
Cousin: Are you f--king with me?
Me: No. HAHAHAHAH! Come see for yourself. The guy who registered it is in Denmark.
Cousin: Quit playing.
Me: You should have registered the domain.
He checks the monitor where I have the whois page pulled up. His jaw drops.
Me: Don't worry about it.
My cousin is speechless. I try to console him -
Me: Same thing happened to me 3 times. Stuff happens. Some people check up on names for hours. That's all they do. I used to do it.
He is still in shock.
Me: You know what you should do? You should send the guy an email tomorrow inquiring about the domain.
Cousin: That's a good idea.
Next day...
Me: Did you email that guy about the domain?
Cousin: I called him.
Me: You called Denmark?
Cousin: Yeah. He wants $15,000 for it.
Me: Well that sucks. I don't think its worth that much but it sounds like a decent domain.
Cousin: You should call him.
Me: Me? Why?
Cousin: I just want to know if he is consistent with his price.
Me: Well are you going to buy it if he is consistent with his price?
Cousin: Damn. I should have registered the name.
Me: I told you it made sense.
Till this day he can't stand losing a domain, whether as a handreg or at an auction.
