I have recently gained control of a domain xylitol.org.

The site gets +-120 unique visitors a day.

It ranks #1 on google and yahoo when the user searches on "XYLITOL" (xylitol is a natural sugar substitute).

It ranks on the first page of most all search engines.

I need advice in 2 areas -

1. I would like to redesign the site, but i don't want to do something that will affect the SE rankings

2. How can I make money off of this site?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, what type of value could reasonably be assigned to the site as it is currently/ what it could be worth if developed properly

That's an unusual expression - what do you mean by "gained control"?
Do you mean you bought it or what?

To make a long story short, I don't 'own' the domain, but I can now make changes to the site as I see fit. It has been moved to my server, where I can readily make changes.

Thanks, an interesting project ahead of you - I'll leave it to the web developers amongst us to advise on re-design, my only comments are that I don't much like the colour scheme and the italic font with shadow makes the text look a bit "shaky" like it's vibrating!
Look forward to seeing what you eventually do with it - post some links back as you make the changes so that we can see how it's developing :)
