Weird..

There are 617 (618, including this one) threads in the .mobi subforum.

Just 5 in .tv (another of those new popular TLDs), 227 in Other (dating back to 2004), 1 in .de, 1 in .co.uk, etc. etc.

The .mobi forum is practically full of postings by a handful of individuals putting up threads about every little website on .mobi (usually in this format: *** XYZ blah blah ***). How come no one's doing that for any other extension?

Maybe thats because people aren't interested in other extensions...
But then, .tv has been selling a lot too, with many large sales. I won't even begin talking about .co.uk or .de. Maybe these extensions don't need daily reports of every tiny website sighted by a couple of individuals.

So you populate an authoritative forum like DNF with posts of .mobi "sightings", giving the impression to the average noob that .mobi is the best thing since .com, and you eventually land suckers like Alvaro who buy the hype.

I can swear a couple of members here have been hired by dotmobi

But seriously, while it all might be in the name of profit, don't you think its potentially damaging? The Whois of Poker.mobi and Fun.mobi says Domain Capital. I don't know if they're owned by Domain Capital, or if they're financed by them. If they're financed by them, you can see that some folks are falling for .mobi so much to take loans for them, loans they might not be able to pay back (of course, if they're owned by Domain Capital, its a different thing).

It's like a pump and dump stock. I think if .mobi fails they have the potential for a lawsuit. The market is artificially inflated. It should not be so unnaturally high and overvalued by Sedo and everyone else who pumps it. If it is good alternative extension it will grow naturally. NO ONE has to pump up .com, it's naturally the best extension. NO ONE can show one reason why .mobi is good yet. Let it grow, don't pump it.

imo...it's not so much about the extensions, as it is about the controversy and the speculation surrounding the "value assessments" of a "potential"...

the potential being, ALL that could be, will be and allegedly already exists, in association with one domain extension.

by all practical standards, it's current percieved value would be automatically "rejected" by established venture capitalists.

it's a product that doesn't do anything, unless it's developed and embraced into "mainstream" usage.

sure plenty of "big biz" may have their dn in the extension, but that can be had for reg-fee.

if fact if mr mobi was really smart, they would have GIVEN all big biz the extension for FREE, with a mini-developed site included!

so uh..mr mobi, if you're reading this and REALLY want to make more money....see me :)

and that goes for mr tv too!

The thing that really turns me off is the posts every second day about any little .mobi sighting. And its usually just a few people doing it. They not only list the site, but also give in depth details about the site owner...the most hilarious was the one for Hsm2.mobi, with a 2 page biography of High School Musical 2, followed by a brief bio of Disney (as if people didn't know about them).

It sometimes feels that the .mobi lovers are trying TOO hard to make everyone believe that .mobi has value (which is just fluff).

The worst part is, many people will actually buy the hype when they see 600+ threads all proclaiming .mobi to be the biggest thing since .com.

I'm not sure if Domain Capital's financed them or owns them, but Fun.mobi and Poker.mobi are two examples where some poor schmuck got suckered into the hype and actually took out a loan to buy the names (the Whois shows the admin contact as Domain Capital for the two names, which leads me to believe they might've been financed). Wonder what the buyer's will do when the payments are due...

618? And I thought the Global Warming threads were excessive.

It's quite apparent that members can create as many new threads on the same subject as they want to, It's the motives behind it that are the problem, such as self promotion, hype and propaganda, All at the expense of other members.

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but I see no rules against this.... Perhaps it's time for Management address the problem and provide some clarification.

while we're still discussing this, someone started thread no. 619 listing yet ANOTHER .mobi site. The backslaps from the usual suspects should be coming in soon to the poster.

Say how about we start doing that for every .com sighting? Might make an interesting read.

Obviously, if we did not give you ladies and gents something to talk about, you'd have nothing to talk about.

But, don't let me interrupt this incredible discussion and hypothesis regarding mTLD employess, sashas incredible intellect, Raiders conspiracy theories and wanting to place quotas on discussions.

You all just go on right on ahead and figure out a way of killing .mobi once and for all.

Meanwhile, I'll be taking care of business on the opposite end.

you know i'm sure if you search, you will find that this type of thing was documented early on when websites were rolled out for the first time.
