Sadly we often hear of problems following a traffic name sale - buyer not realising the sort of traffic that lives up to the sales claim.
If you often buy traffic names what do you do to ensure that you are not buying a load of disappointment?

Good post!
1. Buy keywords, people type them naturally.

Other than that, it can all be faked, including overture stats. You can use the suggestion tool to see how many people are typing the term w/extension, but who's to say the seller wasn't the one typing it in overture for 3 months.

Links are good, but check out the links by visiting them, don't just go by a number. Some links are worthless.

Check the server logs and google to see if high traffic domains are forwarded to the domains to pump up the numbers.

Looking forward to what others say.

:)

Use your head!

1. If it sounds too good to be true, it is!

2. If the name is klitzy.info or drinkle.biz, do you think it gets 300 uniques a day?

3. Use the tools available.

  • Check with OVT tool without the extension.
  • Check with OVT tool WITH the extension.
  • Run the name trough Google.
  • Check for links.

4. Know the reputation of the person you are dealing with.

5. Ask for server logs.

6. Test the traffic on your server.

7. You usually don't get good traffic names for $100.

7. Don't be so gullible!

8. Use your head!

I look at lots of different things on a domain.. google, yahoo, msn, marketleap, overture, alexa, server stats, archive.org, whois info, the site's source code, etc. If they don't all match up or aren't consistent with what the seller says I pass.

It's not usually that tough to find the fakes if you do your homework =P

What do you think about this observation I heard recently?

"I think there are worthless link builder sites fueled by some kind of script you can buy or rent to generate thousands of computer generated false links".

Anyone any experience of this?
How would you know?

Google prompts this message, when checking a domain with a five digit link popularity. Needless to say that something is fishy. .. d:)

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 4 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included

There is no reason it can't. If it was previously developed/promoted- sure it will have traffic. Do you think the only form of traffic is organic (non-branded) type ins?

Investigate all claims of traffic

my tip....

if you're willing to wait 3 yrs. or more, for the return on your investment in a revenue producing domain, then some good buys can be acquired under $1k.

ie: a "type-in" domain making $1.00 a day @ 3 yrs revenue = $1095.00

in this case, i'm sure the owner of this domain would be happy to sell this for $500 > $800 or even less!

therefore taking 6 yrs. to recover expenses and 1k revenue!
if you made 10 of these deals.......

it would take 6 yrs. to recover 10k expenses, plus 10k revenue

so after 3 yrs., you could have 10 domains paying $300.00 month profit!

depends on your capital and patience!

Checking site referrers in the web stats is always helpful as well. A lot of the free "junk" traffic will stands right out to you very noticeably in the referrals.
