ââ¬ËPorn-nappingââ¬â¢ linked to city
Herald Press Staff and wire reports
NEW BRITAIN -- U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatchââ¬â¢s Web site -- like the sites of most of those serving in Congress -- contains links to the Republican senatorââ¬â¢s biographical information, constituent services and legislative accomplishments.
Earlier this week, a part of the Utah senatorââ¬â¢s site -- http://www.senate.gov/--hatch/ -- focused on links to Utahââ¬â¢s natural wonders -- including those of some well-endowed women.
A link on the senatorââ¬â¢s site invited users to "Explore Utah," but rather than finding the pristine mountaintops, "what they got was BigNaturals.com, an X-rated Web site dedicated to buxom models," The Salt Lake City Tribune reported.
The link from the conservative senatorââ¬â¢s Web site had been "porn-napped" -- apparently by a resident of the Hardware City.
Rick Broadhead, an author penning a book on Internet mishaps, told the Associated Press that "porn-napping" is becoming a common form of cybersquatting. Porn site operators pick up domain names from other users after the registration has expired.
According to the Associated Press, Hatchââ¬â¢s site was linked to a Utah-related search engine whose address was snatched up on May 14 by Tim Bach of New Britain.
The Herald Press confirmed Bachââ¬â¢s ownership of the site through a search of Internet registrations. Repeated requests for comment -- both by telephone and via e-mail -- were not returned Saturday.
BigNaturals.com is registered to Miami-based RK Netmedia Inc.
Ernesto Morales, RK Netmedia Inc.ââ¬â¢s operating officer, told The Salt Lake City Tribune "that a Tim Bach with the same hometown also was listed as one of RK Netmediaââ¬â¢s resellers."
Calls to RK Netmedia Inc.ââ¬â¢s Miami offices on Saturday were not answered.
Kevin Cowk, owner of TheGlobalSearch.com, said a Utah resident who had essentially run the original search-engine site as a GlobalSearch franchise let it lapse, but he was furious that someone else had swooped in on it.
"I am so ticked off at them personally that if I find them I will throttle their children," said Cowk, the latest porn-napping victim. In April, a Michigan United Way affiliate had its Web site taken over by a pornography site operator. A Chicago power company, Florida sheriffââ¬â¢s office and a city in Illinois have all had their old Web sites porn-napped, as well.
