.ORG Registry Allows Spanish Domains, Stops Domain Tasting
It is now possible to register .org domains that contain the Spanish characters á, é, Ã*, ñ, ó, ú, or ü. However, it appears that many registrars have not integrated this option into their system yet. The Daily Domainer tried to register a Spanish .org domain at several different registrars listed at the Public Interest Registry (PIR), which manages the .org domain, and the only place where it worked seamlessly is Joker.com (if you find another registrar where it actually works, let us know).
Additionally, PIR announced that it will be charging a deletion fee of $0.05 in case a domain registrar deletes more than 90% of its freshly registered .org domains within any 30 day period. This measure is expected to stop the practice of domain tasting, which currently allows domain registrants to give back (delete) nonperforming domains at no cost within the first five days.
The ICANN-approved amendment to the .ORG Registry Agreement is available here (PDF file). Excerpt:
6. Excess Deletion Fee. PIR may charge registrars a fee (the âExcess Deletion Feeâ) for each Registered Name deleted within the five day add grace period [â¦] during any thirty (30) day period in the event Grace Period Deletes are in excess of ninety percent (90%) of the total number of initial registrations made by the registrar over the relevant time period as determined by PIR.
The Excess Deletion Fee shall be US$.05 (five cents) per Grace Period Delete.
