Step-By-Step Instructions on Dropped Domains Buys

Hi guys,
I’d like to buy a dropped domain and I dont know where to start. I’ve read a lot, but it would be nice to read any step-by-step tutorials. Where can I find such? I’d like to find the answer to the following questions:
What is the best place to look for the dropped domains? So far I’ve heard of:
- Domain Face (I’ve already paid %60 for the membership)
- DropDay.Com
- FreshDrop.Net
- ExpiredDomains.Net

I’ve read that there are several stages which the domain that is to be dropped gotta go through before one is able to bid it. However, the phrases like “backorder” or “pending delete” are new to me so I’d like to learn more about those too and about what to expect from each phase.

Now there are 3 big services to use, right? It’s pool.com, snapnames.com and enom.com. Which one do you think is best? Which one to use? I’ve read that it would be best to use all 3 of them to make sure one did his best to obtain the dropping domain.

Good list and comments, but it's important to note that Goddaday Auctions will "lose" 100% of the time against ANY other service, in fact I have beaten them about 10% of the time with hand registration.

BUT, it is cheap and worthwhile if you're not going to be near a computer at drop time.

Here's my highly simplified take on buying expired domain names:

1. PreRelease: This is where you'll find the absolute best domains. A few days after they expire, they show up on the pre-release list. You get these domains by placing a "backorder" with NameJet or SnapNames. If there are no other bidders, you can get the name for $69. If it's a very good name, there will be many other bidders, and the name could go for thousands of dollars.

2. PendingDelete: After PreRelease, domains go through the redemption period where they can't be registered. About 30 days later, they enter PendingDelete status. From this point, you know the day when they are going to be deleted from the registry, and can try to drop catch the name. Either you can pay someone like SnapNames or Namejet to catch the name for you, or you can just try to drop catch it yourself, either manually, or with some specialized software. If it's a good name that you really want, you should probably use a drop catching service (usually about $69). If it's not so competitive, you could probably just catch it yourself for the regular price of a domain name registration.

The best names usually go early in the process through a backorder, while some good names do slip through the cracks and get picked up by drop catchers after they are deleted.

WOW thank you guys for such a great feedback! So let's say I'm on the domainface (or any other service like that) and I just found this site: iho.org whose status is: For Sale (GoDaddy). What do I do now? Do I try to catch it via NameJet? It says I can bid it via the godaddy auctions. Does it mean it has already been taken back by godaddy? Again thank you for your feedback

For sale domains are not expired domains. They're listed by a company or a domainer. You can add it to backorder list and wait for it to expire but I doubt any domainer will drop a lll.org domain.

You can backorder domains with these statuses:
Pre-release
Pending Delete

DomainFace lets you search for every domain listing. You'll have to go into advanced settings and search only the expired auction domains.

Alright... I did it and no domain appeared in the search results (with my settings as well). Let me explain explicitly what I need. I'm looking for high PR domains. I'm not interested in good names, but in the PR. What should I do? Where should I look for them?

Page Rank options are under: "Directories, Indexes, And Backlinks" (on Advanced Search)

Yeah I found it but when selecting all these options I cannot see any domain in the search results. That's impossible. Maybe it's a wrong tool I'm using...

i wouldn't pay any service to "look" for dropping domain names, when there are tons of free websites that provide same info.

Well the money is not a problem. The problem is that after I set the domainface to look for domains that are PR5 or more it shows me like 2 results? Come on! I know there must be more drops with high PR somewhere there I'm willing to pay for this info. A friend of mine grabs like 100s of high PR websites.

For me, namejet works good.

What I have experienced that when you bid on a domain, then others would also start thinking that it has value and competition may increase.
