Stitches for a cut not much bigger than a paper cut?

LOL okay this is crazy. I was redoing my bedroom and my thumb got smashed inside of the babys changing table. To me it hurts of course if I bend it but the cut doesn't seem to be that deep. My mom swears I need stitches because its to wide "in her words". It only bleeds if I try to bend it or if something bumps into it.
