I am looking to getting into investing in stocks and would like to know the best online site with the lowest deposit / fee's.

I am going to be frank and let you know that I have absolutely NO idea what I am doing and have never really had any interest til recently so I would like to start very small and learn myself from there.

Can any of you suggest a legitimate site?

Thanks,
-Mike C.

I use www.etrade.com (brokerage) but now is the time to be putting funds into domains, not highly-volatile stocks -- IMHO!

Not looking for advice on what to buy or how to invest, etc. Just want to know a good site... I want to learn on my own from the ground up... I like trial and error, as long as it doesn't cost me too much ;)

I used to frequent misc.stocks.invest (usenet)

Lots of pump & dump action though. Be careful.

^_^

Believe me domains is definitely going to be a big part of my investing as well, but I would like to mess around with stocks and learn some things.

Do any of these sites have a smaller minimum deposit than $1,000? I know it may not make sense, but just to learn for now? Don't want to risk anymore than that... I am just trying to learn

Sharebuilder.com has no minimum and if you want to do weekly sheduled investments they only charge $4/trade.

ShareBuilder and similar programs are good for slowly building up shares. Definitely is worth looking into.

However at the moment investing in particular domains (especially LLL.coms and generics, IMO) will bring the best short term (~1 year) ROI.

If you want to learn....do not use real money. $1000 is not enough to invest in companies...and anytime you are that limited it makes it tough to make the purchases you want.

So if you plan to "invest" less than $1000 in the market...you are better going off playing blackjack since you will be "investing" in high risk companies that are valued under $5.

Stocks are great investments, especially when holding them for the long run. You don't have to be afraid about inflation as much as when investing your money in bonds. Moreover, currently most stocks are down and if you have the money to invest, now is a good time to buy.

Do not put big amounts of money into stocks if you can't afford to wait for them to turn profitable, though. That would be too risky. Stocks are good if you have enough cash available, but if you run into financial trouble in the near future and are forced to sell your stocks, that can ruin your investment and you may then have to realize a loss.

Personally, I've invested heavily in the stock market (mostly German stocks) since late 2008 and I'm deep in the profit zone today. But I'm going to hold those stocks at least for another two years or so, maybe even longer, and collect the dividends along the way.
