Suspicious user registrations in WordPress

Hi folks,

I have a little WordPress-based blog that nobody ever reads. But just recently, I've started to get notified of "New User Registrations" for this blog. They typically have user names like "buyvuitton", making it clear that these people intend to do some sort of spamming or SEO or other money-seeking activities.

Comments for this blog are moderated, and I do get a trickle of spammy comments, which I delete.

Is there anything bad that these "users" can do after signing up through WordPress, other than trying to post spammy comments? I'm just wondering why this is suddenly happening.

They can overload your server. Turn user registrations off.

Thanks for the advice. I just installed a plugin to stop spammer registrations; will see how effective it is. (If some still get through, I'll turn registrations off altogether.)
