New York City Wants to Change Its Name
The Big Apple doesn't want to be The Big Apple anymore. Now New York City wants to be known as "The World's Second Home."
Do you like "The World's Second Home"? Do you think it will catch on or will New York always be known as "The Big Apple"?
The city has filed an application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the slogan, "The World's Second Home," which would give New York City the exclusive rights to use it to promote business and tourism, report The Associated Press and The New York Times. Expect to see the phrase attached to more than 200 products and services--from mouse pads to money clips and theatrical productions to temporary tattoos. The Times notes that generations of immigrants in New York have long known that the city really is the world's second home.
The No. 1 city most people want to live in is New York City!

Why the sudden quest for a new moniker? It has a lot to do with the city's bid to host the 2012 Olympics. Mayor Michael Bloomberg knows how the system works. The billionaire businessman has been quite aggressive in filing for city trademarks and patents, including an application for licensing the phrase "Made in NY."
You may be surprised by this! The U.S. city with the smartest people is... Washington, D.C. may be the smartest city in the country.

A bit of Big Apple trivia: New York City was nicknamed "The Big Apple" in the 1970s by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau.
