There is so much negativity around these days. Snowe Bill fears....PPC companies to go bust....disappointing auction results...

Even Rick, the Domain King himself, is calling it quits. "The industry is maturing and splintering and becoming more serious and becoming more desperate" he says.

What do you guys think of all this? Should we be selling our portfolios now and gearing up for the next goldrush? Can the industry bounce back?

One thing everyone should be doing is to join the ICA and help protect our industry as best we can.

Domains are not going to disappear? Like real estate we will see up and downs. If you sell your portfolio now let me know. HOw many times have people sold property, in ten was that property worth more or less? I can give you the answer in 90% of the cases the answer is the property is more valuable, in every area. If you can ride out the storm you will collect the fish.

It may be a good time to diversity and get away from PPC and do some other things but the internet is not going to collapse.

Rick calling it quits? I think you misread his latest post :) It's blogging that he has decided to put off for a while.

We are in the midst of the new ‘industrial’ revolution. It’s taking the entire world economy by the storm. The old ways of doing business are going the way of Dodo. The entire infrastructure of the sales and marketing force in most industries is being either discarded or totally revamped. And just like Titanic-the ship saw only the tip of the iceberg, it was the ‘invisible’ part that did the trick. The size of the economy that critically depends on the web presence and web transaction capability is already in the Trillions. Par example, multimillion-dollar businesses are built around diamond.com, rent.com, apartments.com, Mapquest, Amazon, Hotels.com, Travelocity, eBay, etc. The future wannabe: Fund.com. For the new large-scale enterprise the actual dollar price paid for the domain, whether it’s a $10 reg fee or $10 million on the secondary market is becoming irrelevant.

Yes the sky is falling. Everyone should sell me their portfolios for 6 months revenue.

Peaks and valleys my friends .... Enjoy the view from the peaks (look far) and build bridges across the valleys. Concept, vision, inspiration, dedication and results. heh.... it's all as simple as math. 1+1 = 9

Be there ..... your end users will be daunted by the same mountain face. Find your footholds. Plant your anchors and BUILD for the end user. Service the account and pride yourself in your end product. you are what you sold .....imagine that?

This is mental muscle. Flex and be rigid, tight, firm, stout .... while those that throw the hands in the air are crying ...." I give up" you can cry "I give more".

Simple stuff folks ... value added .............. says it all

I think you misread what RS is saying. He has also said domains are the greatest opportunity in this lifetime, and nothing has ever increased in value like good domains, and they will continue to appreciate. I'm paraphrasing, but go back and read all his thoughts on domains, it's very clear he is positive on the domain market.

There is some fear now about changes to rules, and domains becoming easier to take away from their rightful holders. Ofcourse it has to be stopped, but it also shows that many more people are seeing domains as valuable property.

The domain industry is young, there will be lots of disruption and change. PPC companies going bust might just be a sign that there are too many of them, and consolidation will happen. If we all developped our names there wouldn't be a need for PPC companies.

Actually man, I'm seeing some very ominous signs...first the snowe bill, then Rick Latona liquidating his portfolio for below reseller prices (at least on some of them), then Nat Cohen selling some of his names here at DNF...

On the other hand, if there are any premium LLL.coms you wanna offload for a bulk rate of 10k a pop, lemme know

its opposite- the industry will explode this year - especially with all that publicity and snow bill, so grab'em while you can

domainers are too clever to let this industry die- no possible

100% agreed, ups and downs, and domain names will never go away, they will only get more valuable. It would be comparable to replacing the entire postal address system.

Does anyone know how I can get in touch with Rick regarding an acquisition? I know I could contact him through Whois, but I want to make sure my inquiry doesn't end up in his spam filter.

anything you say or imagine, can become a reality or a "virtual reality"

the real battle is over "direct navigation"

google, yahoo,ms and other key players want this traffic

a "virtual monopoly" on "virtual reality"

it is the key value of generic domains and typos

the other key, is the potential of platforms that domains can become

it's the power and influence that a developed website can bring to the world!

It would be comparable to replacing the entire postal address system.

this is the objective of those "key players" in the SE biz

as they already have become "standard" applications in new pc's and laptops

they hope/plan for every new internet user to search the web thru "their" portals. ie: google search bar, att search bar etc

once they control the initial navigation to the internet, they will then have the power to "rename" the link to "your" domain names.

thus making them less valuable!

for example

masking your domain like "tinyurl" does

sounds really "out the box" doesn't it?

but it's possible

your domain "fhaloans.com becomes "fhaloans.google.com" on their pages and in the address bar of your website if they go there from google.

only way visitors could see your domain is when they do "direct navigation"

that's what I see...

Interesting concept. Are you suggesting masking them in the control panel prior to parking? or making sites?

If so, have you done this?

One the other hand, regarding PPC overall, be it parking or adsense, the fact remains that these search engines and PPC companies are in this business to make money and do not necessarily feel obligated to make domainers rich.

PPC companies are in this business to make money and do not necessarily feel obligated to make domainers rich.

With Google leading the pack, they are collectively lowering the PPC payout standard as we speak. Obviously on the second front, PPC ad rates are going through the roof across the board. The lack of transparency in this industry will spell out the web death's of thousands upon thousands of net publishers, who's traffic is being constantly marginalized to the point of financial obscurity.
