I have noticed that the .in ext domains have been doing pathetically on the forums despite some obvious pluses:

1 .in is shorter compared to .com, .net and .info
2 .in is a single syllable. sounds better than many other exts. eg. uk, es, etc.
3 .in goes well with most names and english words.
4 .in suffixes some words eg. list.in = listing, work.in = working, etc.
5 .in is not restricted to India. anybody can register .in.

Besides for India, .in can also stand for:

5. In = Internet
6. In = International
4. In = Information (shorter alternative to info?)
8. In = Inside

Despite all this inherent potential, the .in performance is really poor. What can be said of the short and long term future of this wonderful extension? Raj.:?:

I am no guru in predicting its outcme, but being from India i can surely say this:
Yes some companies are switching to .in, but that is only when they already HAVE .in available to register. I avent seen or heard of any company actually purchasing a .in from anybody for top $'s.

If a company is a registered pvt ltd here with the name registered from the ROC (Registrar of Companies), they can contend a case to take the domain.
That being said, only the bigger corporations are "also" going after *.in domains, besides owning the .coms. check
http://domainsmagazine.com/Domains_12/Domain_7680.shtml

I definitely dont see people going after generic names with .in in India for BIG $'s anytime soon. Everybody still thinks .com is the king and .in's are seldom sought after if not readily available.

If its a big company domain, they will take it away, if its a generic, nobody is REALLY (Really = ready to dish out a top $) after it.

Maybe this perception is wrong, but thats what it seems being here in the capital of the nation.

From what I have seen, .in has been doing quite well --- particularly within the last several months. LLL.in market has been steady, and there's even been a couple $XXXX .in sales (and numerous mid XXX .in sales).

But are those sales to end users or amongst speculative resellers?
If to end users, can u quote some?

But Jagusa, the .in sales thread in this forum does not give that kind of an impression. if there is a recent trend, that's good news !!

i think for one, not many people realize .in is available to be registered by anyone. it may not be hot now, but imo, its just a matter of time.

I'm with gawnd on this one and think it will be successful. The co.in ext is already quite successful in India and quite a lot of people are switching over to .in there. I think it will be a success in about 2-3 years, it just needs a few big public sales to get it going.

Domainers registered the .in domains, much before any development happend in the .in space.
Hence, not people in India are aware of the .in extension.

At times the Ministry of Comm & IT is confused, as evident from this ad http://cribb.in/wp-content/uploads/2007/april/ministry_communications_ind.gif

In case of .co.in the website got developed first and then came the domainers.
Just because .in is shorter than .co.in, it would not get traffic automatically.
In Indian context .co.in still get atleast 10x times more traffic for the same keyword.
(If you are looking for type-in traffic then .co.in is much better than .in,
we had low-mid $XX,XXX offers for some of our top .co.in domains)

.in & .co.in does not get top ranking on the .com version of the search engine.
Although, it may rank well on the local version (Google.co.in, Msn.co.in, Yahoo.co.in etc),
most Business in India try targetting the NRI's (in addition to the local) and hence they need the global reach.

There is still value for top quality keyword .in extension, but people still prefer .com names with India Suffix and Prefix or Hindi words written in english.

From namebio over the last three months, these are .in sales recorded over $1000:

get.in $2328
Webcam.in $18,299
greaterhyderabad.in $1,500
financialmarket.in $1,596

Also, lots of mid-XX sales with "good" letter LLL.in in other markets outside dnf. I have sold dozens of LLL.in for twice reg fee or more, and a few for low XXX. Those are not high margin, but they certainly far exceed registration fees.

You can't expect .in to compete with .com, .net or .org sales except maybe in India. I think .in has a good future because India has such a large population, but it will take a while because not everyone there has internet, or speaks english, but I hear the middle class is growing in India. Maybe this is a good time to still get some cheap in the aftermarket.

Exactly the point.
Single words or Company Names might do better for .in, but
Generic and Two Worded domains might not.
