Anyone have any insight into the future of virtual related sites, as in virtual worlds or virtual activities?

Last year I had an idea to create a virtual world within the internet combining everything. Model yourself into a character and start whatever life you want, go shopping, gambling, walk into a tiger woods golf game, ebay billboards and other advertisiments within this world, just goes on and on and on.

This guy beat me to it but its not as complex as my idea but it and they "virtual websites" are getting very popular.

Sorry for rambling.

I was going to setup a site where businesses could buy a building in a virtual chat room or chat shopping centre to be exact.

I got a few quotes for the graphics but it was far too much.

Hello,

I own one of the largest forums for the online community "Habbo Hotel". (http://www.habbohotel.com)

This game has been around since early 2000's and is growing rapidly. It started as a finnish project but has expanded around the globe. Habbo Hotel is now a million-dollar venture.

Basically its a virtual chat-room where you can make your own ""Room"" and decore it with furniture and other items. Habbo makes money by selling "Coins" for real $$ which can be used to make money.

In the last year it has been gaining tremendous popularity & shows new growth every quarter. The corporate site is http://www.sulake.com

No future IMHO. You can't replace real emotions.

How does this relate to online interactive virtual chats? Have you never heard of eDrama?

It is, virtual worlds where you can hang out etc.. they've already evolved pretty well into today's modern society. Emotions can be expressed online as well as off so I don't think that'd be blocking its potential.

I would expect that virtual worlds would get more and more realistic over time, maybe making them more enticing to join. I'm also looking at this from a domainer's point of view... such as domains that contain the word 'virtual'

How many virtual communities do you see now with the world Virtual in front of them though? I can't find much myself.

Don't you agree that the internet itself may transform, that browsers may be integrated with a virtual platform, that navigation may take the shape of visually selecting which way you want to go...
Viewing the future of virtual worlds is obscured if you look at the difference between today's average internet users and those deep into mmorpgs.
We can see what virtual worlds will look like just about as well as someone could imagine the modern internet in 1981.
