As I said, it didn't give me that option, as soon as I right clicked it and partitioned the drive (in the drive manager) it formatted.

Better than the 150GB that I have and the 500GB external that might be dying.

I looked at a 1.5TB but I decided against it.

Your estimate is right on, to. The drive manager is showing 931GB, which isn't too bad. Double the space as the 500GB (which can be a temp storage from now on).

Thank god it's the secondary and not the primary.

This is the first time I'm not thinking "I'll never fill that thing up". I got a 60GB USB drive and thought that (still use it for work). Then, I got the 500GB external and thought "I'll never fill that up".

Now, I have the 1TB and I'm thinking "this'll be full by the end of the year". :)

I use a 150 velociraptor for my sys drive - i find the extra rpm is invaluable. Most programs take one second to load (photoshop, dreamweaver, flash) compared to about 5 with my previous 7200.

Also have a 300GB raid internal setup for backup and a 1GB NAS Storage unit - I prefer to store all media externally, vids, music, images, everything.

I saw some of those fast drives in BB but WOW they're expensive - I think it was $250 for a 300GB.
I used to like storing my files like that externally but this drive is cheaper (money is an issue now - especially since my 60GB 2.5" is getting full and getting a bit gray).

Draggar My suggestion is to not cheap out and get a drive with a high seek speed and RPM. Either something with a large cache (i.e. 32mb) or a 15,000 RPM ought to see that format happen a lot faster. And make sure it's on SATA.

South: Quick formatting isn't formatting, it's just getting rid of the file allocation table and saying that anything that was there can be overwritten now.
If you want a clean drive that isn't going to throw up any errors, you've got to fmrat it.

Which NAS box would you recommend? I shop @ Newegg as well :)

I've had extremely good luck with WD drives in the past. Plus, this is a secondary drive for data storage. If I got something to replace my primary I would get something faster.

It's scary to think I already have roughly 300MB filled on it and I'm still restoring files. :(

A funny question because as soon as I ordered mine (Buffalo LinkStation) it was listed as a "deactivated" item over at the egg. I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever, and Buffalo is a US company.

It's actually pretty sweet, it doubles as a print server, and I can access all of my files from anywhere with an internet connection. I spend a lot of time in hospitals with my son and we can listen to our music and watch our movies from the linkstation on our laptop at the hospital. I can also print documents at home from the hospital.

Picked up Seagate's external 1.5TB drive recently. Gave me huge problems the first few days (installed software on the drive), has been on good behavior since

Arrogrance: Yeah, I made the same mistake. 1TB Seagate external that would hang my computer if it was switched on during the boot sequence. Wouldn't switch on until the computer did, but didn't spin up fast enough to be read as a drive on load, and would switch itself off if the computer itself reset... Except that the computer would attempt to read it to see if it was a bootable partition, and crash!
Took me 3 hours to work that one out *sigh*

Took me a couple of hours to figure out the problem also; turned out to be the software installed on the drive not being compatible to my PC for whatever reason. From what I heard, Seagate (spelled out on its own forum) is having a laundry list of problems on numerous 1 and 1.5 TB models similar to what both you and I were experiencing.
Makes this http://en.expreview.com/2009/01/13/western-digital-to-launch-2tb-hard-drive-this-week.html, all the more appealing down the line :)
