hi,
Can anyone tell me his honest opinion on the upcoming .eu fever? Do you think its really going to be as they say the second most popular tld after .com?
Can anybody give a rough estimation of the future value of premium .eu domain names in comparison to the .com names?

Thanks

Well one thing I can say is that .de is the second largest TLD after .com. That means .de is ahead of .net .org etc.
Also it's not hard to imagine that a lot of .de name owners will want their name with .eu too. Same goes for the 24 other member countries. So yes we can expect a rush IMHO.

When can we start getting them? I have not seen them anywhere.

The open .eu registrations will take place in early 2006, but you can pre-register an .eu domain name now with accredited registrars such as EuroDNS.com. Pre-registering an .eu domain does not guarantee you that you will get it. If you pre-reg an .eu domain you are usually asked to pay for the reg fee. When the open registrations begin, your registrar(competing with the other registrars) will try to register your domain. If he fails to get you that name then you will get a refund.

Is there any real risk to not being a European and registering a .eu?

If you are not living in europe, you can not register an .eu domain in the first place....
The following categories of companies, organizations and individuals will be able to register a .EU domain:
1) Businesses having their registered office, central administration or principal place of business within the European Union
2) natural persons resident within the European Union

Companies who are establised abroad, but own a trademark in Europe or Europeans living outside Europe will contract out. Same counts for non europeans

We all know that won't be followed though, look at all the .us registrations by Europeans and the excuses to as why they could register them.

That's true. It all depends on the flexibility of the correspondant authorities. Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see how this whole .eu matter turns out.
Anything that we can say from our position is just speculations.

The .us is a different horse; it is an unrestricted TLD although originally there were restrictions in place. .EU will be different but it will probably see the biggest rush of speculators since.... .in :-D
