Briefly,

These recent 'trends' flooded and pumped up on forums:

6N .coms
4L NET / ORG
Gibberish 'brandables'
Holo, Drone, Vr....ad infinitum

Mostly only conjured up by 'domainers', on forums. A feeding frenzy (LOL). Alas, many lost money speculating on that trash. I think we can bury the above, those were mistakes.

Meanwhile, those same folks came into newTLD threads and slammed them (and continue), xyz got talked down pretty hard in particular.

Almost always the majority is wrong. Don't believe hype. The .com folks are that have been spewing the unreasonable hype all along, not the other way around. They sound desperate now, pointing out .com sales vs newTLD. newTLD sales are growing. If there were $100m / yr newTLD, there wouldn't be much opportunity left for domainers, would there? That's why they're an 'investment' (undervalued/unrealized). Still, most will buy (err, register...) stupid domains regardless of the extention.

Something I'll add to this... pick a niche that you are familiar with or are passionate about and focus on that as much as possible. You're more likely to pick better quality names if you stay within your realm of expertise.
