I have a question regarding third-level domain names. Or maybe it's a series of questions...

May third level domain names be bought and sold like second-level domains? For example, I buy (for illustrative purposes only): trees(dot)com. Can I then sell to others oak(dot)trees(dot)com? Or are all subdomains mine? If I was to resell oak... or maple...or pine... how would one take ownership? Could I actually transfer that domain name away from the current registrar and to another registrar?

I realize these are probably very basic questions, and I thank you in advance for any insight you can provide.

you can create subdomains and do what you please with them , but transfer of a subdomain is not possible without transfering the domain itself. You can create a company like centralnic.com , they did exactly what you are thinking of with .web.com , .us.com etc.., they created a company where buyers of these subdomains can transfer the subdomains to others , but all through there database only , can't be transfered to another registrar , all the registrars you see selling these are just affiliates , but all database info is actually kept at centralnic.
