I'm looking at the ename.cn marketplace right now, and a lot of domains are marked up pretty heavily, especially one-word English generics. I was in Shanghai, this summer, and that's exactly how it was on the streets of capitalist China - us "foreigners" always end up forking over more than we should.

For your Joe Domainer, I think .com/.cn IDN's are a more realistic investment in terms of price, ROI and widespread use. Right now, I'm trying to get in on the action but even still, I'll have to play it sneaky - any fault in my ABC Chinese and the seller might suddenly default to "reseller-foreigner" pricing aka end user!

What are your thoughts on the .cn aftermarket?

What are your thoughts on the .cn aftermarket?
The Chinese now have over 200 million internet subscribers.

To put this in perspective, consider this:

That is 5 million from being the number one wired nation on earth.

And...

...that represents 16% of their population.

China had stated nearly 2-3 years ago that it wants to have more computers than any other nation in the world but 2009.

In addition, they also want more .cn than other extension. They will unquestionably do both.

Plus, Chinese government officials have mandated that all official offices and sites now use .cn.

I look for sometime after the Beijing Olympics for China to fully implement (or mandate) to all of their citizenry to use the .cn solely. This would also apply to business within China but not necessarily native to China. That will be the cost of doing business in China. I am sure .com will still be used for non-native businesses but when in China will need to use .cn (think something along the lines of IBM.com having to use IBM.cn when originating from China). This is all a theory and opinion I have but based on the previous verifiable facts I am trying to see what is coming behind this movement of China.

To give you some idea how much they are selling, here are some of the recent sales price according to ename.cn. Divide 元 by 7.5 will get you the approximate sales price in USD. In another word, work.cn sold for $8000 USD. I am sure work.com will be sold for at least 1 million.

acdsee.com.cn 40,000元
work.cn 60,000元
art.com.cn 200,000元
dvd.com.cn 200,000元
vote.cn 50,000元
swsoft.cn 5,000元
ventur...tal.cn 30,000元
dcm.cn 40,000元
ncc.com.cn 7,500元
ip.com.cn 100,000元

It was rumored Google paid $14m to a Chinese investor, because they want to use one of the domain G.Cn in the portfolio as their Chinese portal. This is matching the sex.com all time high for getting a .Cn.
There were recently several single char .CN deals around 3-4 million Yuan within China.
Cn money is now less than 7.2 RMB (yuan) to 1 USD.

ename.cn for chinese people but ename.com is for wester investors, same platform two languages. please check it out. I have about 7000+ *.CN names in there. Any *CN names can be pushed online in ename.com/ename.cn, same easy thing.

LOL! So true. Even though I am fluent in Chinese, being located in Canada has made me a Laowai (foreigner).

IDN is on the way.

Now the hard part is figuring out which is better in terms of value...english generic or simplified chinese character?

And which is better in terms of usage? and where?

To me, this has no simple answer as value and usage have two different valuation points.

If the value of a word or character can be based on the actual word/character itself (think of the word Sex for instance, highly valuable in any tld...that word has intrinsic value)...

And the word has great usage value (number of hits/traffic)...

Also, an IDN dot .cn for within china border business?

Or IDN in dot com for international?

Now there is no simple answer at all.

IDN introduction has/will create for an entirely new market and much of that market will be dead space, domain name wise.

For the most part, this opens up an entirely new market of domain speculators and a great majority will fail.

This is going to be one big fat mess.

My current thoughts are,

I wish the a-holes who use this forum as a tool to find domainers would quit spamming the hell out of me offering each and every one of my domains in a .cn or any of the other totally useless subextensions.

Not meant to drift too far away from this (.CN sub-forum), but the trend should be moving towards ITLD, that is the part to the right side of the dot. Of course, with .CN booming exponentially, there would still be A LOT of profits in this before ITLD eventually kicks in.
