Macau, a tiny special administrative region of China, appears to have overtaken the famous Las Vegas Strip as the world's top gambling destination.
Macau is set to earn $6.8bn (£3.6bn) in casino revenues in 2006 compared with Las Vegas' $6.6bn, say leisure industry consultants Globalysis.

What's the scene like in Macau? Is it all high-end or does it appeal to the unwashed masses the way Vegas does? There can be benefit in both depending which direction you want to go. Obviously the big gamblers are great for casinos, but the masses of people are great for the sourrounding ecomony (restaurants, entertainment, hotels, etc).

Macau is a very small city. It used to be a Portugese colony before being returned to China so you can still see a lot of the traces of it's colonial history like the buildings, the street names, etc. But it is nothing as fancy and flashy as Vegas. Most of the gamblers there are from mainland China. The official tourism information can be found at http://www.macautourism.gov.mo/index_en.phtml

I read quite some time ago that Macau was larger than Vegas in gaming revenue.

I believe it is much more gaming oriented and much less extravagance and over-the-top you see in Vegas.

Macau is growing because many of the big Vegas casinos are building there, like the Wynn Macau. They are going to have convention centers, shows, shopping, 10,000's of hotel rooms and condos - in short they are going to bring the Vegas style over to Macau and make it into a world class gambling destination. Over a billion people live within a few hours flight of Macau, check out all the neighboring countries on a map. For people in North America who have 'seen and done' Vegas and Reno, Macau is the next place to go. The funny thing is, Macau has surpassed Vegas in gambling revenue and there are still more hotels/casinos planned to open in 2007 and 2008. From everything I've read it is going to be huge. The other factor is that the average gaming table in Macau takes in more than an average table in Vegas, because the Chinese tend to be bigger gamblers. Within the next year you'll probably start to see more travel advertising for Macau packages and flights.
