I have purchsed 3 domains where the word olympic or olympics appear and SEDO refuses to place them for sale due to Trademark/Copyright laws in Germany.

Question. Knowing that I cannot sell them, can I use them anyway for non profit sites?

Thanks!

tks davezan1.

Any chance to get rid of them, in case? I am new at this. Cheers

Iwonder how come I see so many domains for sale on Afternic carrying the word above despite the fact that it is clearly written in the Whois informationthat they cannot be transferred... I am lost...

That's right, they told me that within 5 days from reg. they can cancel it... and they even refunded for that!

You can always point them to the Olympics Sucks website ...

http://www.olympicssuck.com/

From the minimal response in the Guestbook there, it appears most folks like (or at least don't hate the Olympics too much) ... rather I put the site up in large part due to the IOC's (and related organizations) over-handed response to people using the word "olympic" anywhere in domains, etc...

While their Olympic mark is very strong, they aren't the only ones with marks for olympic and similar.

There are numerous registered marks with 'olympic' in them, including some with solely that word. And some of those marks appear to be relatively recent - referring to the first use date.

End of tirade ... from a business aspect, likely the best course of action is what you did - deleting the domains and move on; every so often they do bulk cease and decist letters followed with bulk UDRPs, and sometimes worse.

Yep, some registrars offer a 5 day delete window for registrants - you're lucky you were able to get out of that mess without paying anything; even better, it's like those registrations never even happened - they won't come back to haunt you later on like 'expired' domains sometimes can.

i'm not sure what you mean by "clearly written in the Whois information that they cannot be transferred".

I've transfered domains containing 'olympic' to other registrars with no problems numerous times as I've consolidated domains over the years.

I just did some searching on Afternic and even BuyDomains is offering such domains for sale; saw no such messages about them being blocked.

With that said, it's possible some registrars have taken it upon themselves to not accept / lock such domains.

Simply what I said. It's written that the domain cannot be transfered from the current holder.

However some are not locked and some are... Afternic got plenty for sale while Sedo refuses them

Welll, I had some nice names but I didnt feel like entering possible disputes, got enough troubles and lawyers on my payroll...
