Hi Everyone.

I think there has been limited discussion on this subject so I thought it would be helpful to get everyone's input on the breakdown of best extensions from most valuable to least.

Here're my observations:

Top TLD extensions:

1. COM
2. NET
3. INFO
4. ORG
5. BIZ
6. NAME

Top ccTLD extensions:

1. TV
2. US
3. CA
4. CO.UK
5. EU/DE
6. Other european ccTLD's
7. WS
8. CC

We'll adjust the list as feedback rolls in.

Erm, I have to put .DE and .Co.UK ahead of .CA, as much as I love the .ca extension and am a proud Canadian.

This may change though, as .ca is starting to really pick up steam.

.US and .DE and Co.UK should have the top 3 spots, .CA is in the top 5 I would say though, as is .TV.

.WS and .CC are there on the radar, and getting bigger, but still a mostly unknown commodity at this time.

The GTLD's order seems fine to me.

ccTLD: continent code TLD ???

European Union member nation fixed address is required to register.

Perhaps the EU is heading towards becoming a unified nation with member nations becoming states or provinces. Who knows.

CC tld = Country Code tld
G tld = Generic tld
EU is not nation, but .EU is not generic either

That's correct.

It's a matter of naming conventions. Technically it's handled as a ccTLD (country code TLD) although it is a continent. Both start with "c" coincidentally. But, of course, EU is not refering to the entire continent (yet), but to a politically and economically tied group of European nations.

Just for the sake of completeness: Europe IS continent, EU is NOT a continent, EU is subset of Europe.

Right. So, although EU doesn't refer to one particular country but a group of countries it would rightly be considered a ccTLD. All the more so since restrictions are placed on who can register a .eu whereas no such restrictions exist for registering gTLD.

As of December 31, 2005 there were 627,367 registered domains. They said in the annual report (pdf) there was a 29% increase in registrations from the previous year (2004).

:peace:

Damn, let's get that sucker up to the million mark.

EVERYONE, go register a .ca name, even if it's crappy.

Should hit 1 million by end of 2008 if not sooner!

If they would allow .ca to anyone, the domain could become as good as .de
