Hello to all!
Well the response to my adsense thread was so much help,
thought I would post this in here as well.

the only domains I have dealt with in the past (some of you may know) is 3 letter domains, that being mainly coms and nets.
and of course never worried about traffic with them etc.

well now I am developing websites/trying to lol.
and what I would like to know is HOW do I get TRaFFIC?

the only traffic I am getting is WORD OF MOUTH.

What I want to get is TRAFFIC to my site/forums...

how do I?
obviously I know Advertise and Submit Search Engines.
but the SUBMIT search engine thing doesn't seem to rewarding to me.

and as far as advertising I would rather try to get traffic in other ways for now- being the site I am "developing" is mainly just to use my Google Adsense Ads on it/one page site with content revolving around the Adsense Ads.

So can you please help?
how do I get/use SEO?
how do I my link "out there" so to speak?
how can I get much more traffic to my site?

Sorry for such the newb question, but when it comes to traffic I know nothing.

Thanks!:hat:

That's the $64,000 question.

If a could give you a relatively simple answer I would probably be a millionaire.

Basically it takes a lot of hard work. Links help - those take time to acquire, lots of emailing and submitting to directories. SEO can be great, but its getting more and more complicated and professional help costs a fortune.

Its very hard to consistantly generate traffic quickly, I think the key is to use high quality content, smart design & SEO and give it some time to develop and grow. You can't rush traffic along...

In terms of finding help for certain areas (SEO for instance) a quick Google search will provide more knowledge than I will ever be able to.

Good luck!

This is what I do, it may be wrong.
If it is wrong, I'm sure someone on here will correct me.

1. buy traffic domains and redirect the traffic to your site
2. pay others to puts links or banners to your site on thier sites
3. get your site listed in search engines
4. add optimized pages with fresh test to existing site

First of all, traffic will build up if you have high quality content on your web site. Then you can also purchase relevant domains with existing traffic to redirect an initial amount of uniques to your site. However, quality content will always be the number one reason why people visit a web site, and, what is eventually more important, why they return to the site.

From my past experience bet. 1999 - 2001:

I used viral marketing, sort of.
Membership: From 0 member to 20,000+ in 4 months if I remember correctly.
SearchEngine Ranking in less than 3 months:
Google: #2 out of few hundred thousands.
MSN: #4 out of few hundred thousands.
Yahoo: #1 out of few hundred thousands.
And all others were about same (alta-vista, northern light?...).

Here is what I did.
Find out what every online business site needs.
I said business site because they will promote their own site heavily,
and in turn, promote your own thing via viral marketing.

Simplest example: This is example only.
Every business site need some sort of typein form.
Visitor may fill out form to get more info.
You offer free script.

Business site owner do not install any script on their server.
All they have to do is copy custom script automatically created
from your site and paste few lines of html code onto their page
and you serve script from your own server.

Here are two reason why you don't just give them script.
1. Business owner may not know anything about script.
They may not know how to install script.
They are just simply intimidated messing with script.
So, this way, all they have to do is copy & paste.
In other words, do pain for business site owner.

2. Every script you give away will have link to your site because
script is running from your server. And this is very important
for search engine. More link to your site, better page ranking.

If you want to push little further:
put very tiny link on the bottom of this form -
Form served by "your-site.com".

Do not put "free service by "your-site.com".
Business site owner hates to make their visitors think they are using
free service.

Every time this link is clicked, their visitor come to your site looking
for free form script, therefore viral. Be sure to make it as popup.
You don't want to steal business site owner's visitors. Matter of fact,
make it popunder.

OK, now how to promote your free script service to begin with.
There are many site that list free things, services, etc...
These site usually put new listing on top of their page and update
their site every week. Meaning you will have maximum exposure for at
least one week. And this may be more than enough to get you started.

Contact ezine owners: Ask them to review your free service. They just
may do article on you. Some ezine owners have millions of subscribers.
Just simple one line mention of your site will do wonders for you.
If you must pay, be sure to tell them make it look like real review,
not paid advertisement.

Oh, I almost forgot.
Be sure to update your site at least once a day.
When I say update, I don't mean real update everyday.
Change "A" to "An". Search engines seems to love site that updates
frequently :)

Remember, these were done back in 1999.
It may not work now, but, it did wonders for me.

Hope I didn't waste your time :)

There are as many ways to get traffic as there are answers to the question, "what is love?"

I like to categorize them by those that cost money and those that are free.

The ones that cost money:

- Paid directory submissions (IE: Joeant.com)
- PPC advertisement (adwords.google.com, adbrite.com, etc...)
- Advertisement forum on DNforum has many people selling links on their websites.

Some that are free:

- Write articles and submit to article directories (articles with a link to your site, of course).
- Write a press release and submit it to PRweb.com (If you spend money your PR will get more exposure, but you can send it for free as well).
- Surf around and look for sites in your niche. Look for pages on sites that could really benefit by having a link to your site - and ask the webmaster for a link. Some would be happy to do so even without getting a link in return.

As a rule of thumb: creativity is rewarded. People remember the unusual, the fresh, the original. And they will link to it and tell their friends about it.

Regardless of what technique you use, your time and money spent on getting traffic is best rewarded when your web site offers high quality content.

Just my two cents.
