one of my customers (through enom pdq) is trying to transfer his domain to his enom account. However, the other registar, where its currently registered, is messing him around big time. They keep saying that they havent got the transfer request email yet - and said that it could have been lost as spam.

I told my customer to tell them to simply change the admin and technical contact info to his details - as they should have done at the start. He said that they had already requested this but 'She
has to send a request to the registrar, and they charge high fees for
such changes.'.

Its an absolute joke. Heres what my customer just wrote to me there (ive removed names as i dont want to jepordise the transfer in any way)

They go by the names FIDPAC and super.nu, and seem to be a Tucows
reseller.

When we asked them to change the contact details and DNS settings, they
wanted $99. We then decided to transfer the registration away from them.
For that, we had to pay $25 for them to remove the lock on the domain.

The situation is that PERSON1 and PERSON2 have a business
relationship. have a business
relationship. PERSON2 originally registered domainname.com on her
account with super.nu/FIDPAC. Their business relationship has changed,
so PERSON1 needs direct control of his domain and web site. I am assisting
PERSON1 with the transfer, since he doesn't understand any of the
technical issues.

$99 to change the contact details to the guy that actually owns the domain. Is this even legal? Surely you cant do this?

anyone else had this sort of problem before with cowboy registars?

any help would be grateful

There are certainly some "pirate" registrars out there, happy to hijack your names - I have a similar problem with Pacnames (Totalnic) who refuse to unlock my domains to enable a transfer out. I have complained to ICANN and send them copies of all of my emails to Pacnames but I'm not holding my breath - wonder what 12th November will do for such cases?

i havent really kept up to date with domain news - what signifcance does 12th november have?

Check it out at www.icann.org/transfers . But in a nutshell, if someone starts
a transfer request for the domain name, the losing registrar must allow the
name to transfer out whether they get a response from the registrant or
administrative contact on record or not
.

Standard deny transfer conditions still apply, though.

Mr Webname, wasn't Pacnames' work supposed to be done by Nov. 2 (though
I doubt it)? Any updates?

They have completed their useless control panel but it does not allow unlocking of domains so they still hold my domains to ransom and refuse to remove the registrar-lock.
I have again asked them to do so but if past conduct is repeated they will completely ignore my request. I will duplicate my complaint to ICANN but they seem like a toothless dog. My only hope is that Nov 12th will have some impact, otherwise I will take more drastic action.

i really cant see it from their point of view (aholes who dont do what theyre supposed to do)

They are probably thinking that why should they help people who transfer away - but surely this is the sort of thing that can get a company really bad press.

I sort of assumed that most webmasters are more clued up now but time and time again i see them going with poor companies to register their domains - i was lucky enough to get burned by it when i just started in web development

I just read from another forum that RADiSTAR called Pacnames and they gave
him 1-2 weeks to implement that unlock/transfer thing. Wanna try contacting
them again?

I had a problem with namescout.

*had* is the magic word here.
They wouldnt send me authorization codes.
No replies etc...
What did I do?

I send them a link to a thread I posted HERE regarding the issue which someone answered with an ICANN(t) link.
well, I'll be...
I got the authorization codes for my entire account in LESS than 24 hours...
DNF can work magic, at least to the registrars who care for their reputation.
