I am honored to inform you that I was able to acquire Tsunamis.com.

The site is now online:

Tsunamis.com

I had been working diligently building up my resources and information databases on the disaster, and planned on launching several sites (in conjunction with Tsunami Relief Charities.com) when a fortuitous, once-in-a-lifetime event occurred.

Let me explain:

Last week I was doing some appraisals for fellow members here in the DNforum
when I came upon an appraisal request for Tsunamis.com. I could barely believe my eyes; I did not even think of appraising the domain – I knew I needed to do whatever was necessary to acquire the domain, period.

It was unquestionably the vehicle that I had been hoping and praying for – the vehicle that would allow me to reach the largest audience possible for my work with the tsunami disaster.

A few gut-wrenching (for me) days went by as I negotiated for the domain. I knew many other people also wanted the domain, and I began to lose hope, believing that I would not be able to strike a deal with the seller.

So I submitted my best offer and anxiously waited for a response from the seller. Several hours passed and I thought I lost the domain. I felt horrible. But I kept checking my PM box…hoping, praying.

Finally, I saw “Unread – 1” in my box.

I took a deep breath and clicked on the message and read the following:

“The domain is yours.”

I was overjoyed. I immediately paid for the domain.

The seller knew about my plans with the site so he quickly changed the DNS settings to point to my site. I uploaded the completed pages, and began diligently working on the rest of the site.

Concomitantly, I began expanding my contact base by sending e-mails to individuals, groups, organizations, agencies, etc, who could be of assistance with the various sections of the site.

The result: I put up the most comprehensive site that I could as quickly as I possibly could, and I broadened my contacts so I am now ready to serve the world community and to move on any issue that may arise.

Let me now give you an overview of the site.

The home page of Tsunamis.com is the home page from Tsunamis Relief Charities.com. The focus of that page will continue to be on fundraising.

The next section is “Latest Tsunami News.” This area is where I am posting concise and important news stories. Stories are entered chronologically, with the most recent stories at the top.

Next is the “Missing People” section. Thousands of people are still missing in several countries, including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Seychelles, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Thailand. Visitors can submit a missing person form or peruse lists of missing people.

Additionally, a list of tsunami disaster hotlines is available.

The other main areas of the site include:

Prayer and Reflection Room

Tsunami E-mail and Website Scams

What is a Tsunami?

December 26, 2004 Tsunami

Tsunami Pictures

----------------------------

The objectives of the site include:

1) Raising as much money as possible for tsunami relief.
2) Raising awareness about all aspects of the disaster.
3) Locating as many missing people as possible.
4) Remembering and honoring those who died because of the tsunami.
5) Keeping the public informed about the disaster.

I want to extend a very deep thank you to the administrators, moderators, and fellow members of this outstanding community.

I was able to purchase this domain – the most important domain of my lifetime – because of the environment that exists here – namely, an environment that attracts the very best and most professional players in the industry.

Being at the right place at the right time means EVERYTHING.

The DNforum is the right place…and thank God I came by at the right time.

The day I purchased Tsunamis.com was one of the best days of my life.

I am highly honored and privileged to be able to serve people in need via this domain.

You are all the best.

Take care,

Kevin Caruso

great work Kevin

You are truely an example of a domainer doing great things and giving back to your industry. I hope a news network will be notified of this to give the site extra exposure.

Kevin, I applaud you and your work. I don't know how much you spent, but it is so encouraging to see your effort, and not a single Google AdSense ad or attempt to capitalize on this wonderful domain.

If you need help developing this site, or adding database-enabled functionality to the missing people (i.e., auto-update, searchability), please let me know. I would be glad to contribute where possible to aid your cause.

Sam

P.S. I noticed the warning on the front page that "Website Links are not active. To avoid scams TYPE the name of the site into the address bar". While this is a good practice in general to train people to avoid scam emails, doesn't this also promote typographical errors? Also, this may make it more troublesome for some people to visit each site and determine which is appropriate for their donation -- they may simply visit one or two, then donate or walk away. Just food for thought.

Well done Kevin. When I saw the title for the post, I thought some sick b***t*** was trying to sell the name and make a couple of $, so it's nice to see someone who's motivated enough to actually do something.

If you need hosting for the domain PM me, I can sort you out.

One small point though, the information on the front page is very US biased. Maybe some of the excellent charities located outside of the US deserve a mention as well.

I've set up URL forwarding on my domain LaPalmaTsunami.com to direct it's traffic to Kevin's site. I hope this helps in a small way :)
