What I want to know is how does Tucows grab expiring domains before they hit auction, when some of these domains aren't even registered with them in the first place? Do they have a behind the scenes deal with select registrars?

2 things from me...

1) Tucows does nothing wrong.

2) I have no right to demand or complain when Tucows keeps what they want, why ? Its non of my business, I have no right and my only reasoning is my own greed to obtain a name.

People need to grow up and stop feeling they have the " right " to everything. Life isn't always fairly played, get over it. And besides anything of even remote value on a drop is grossly over paid for any ways 99% of the time. The only people who should really be erked is the TM guys

The renewal reminder is a courtesy, if you rely on this to keep on top of your portfolio you're going to lose domains...

Enom is doing the same thing and I have suspicions others are as well, they just aren't open about it, kudos to Tucows for being forthright (although Tucows is easy to dislike but for other reasons)

Most if not all registrars will keep selected names as part of the evolution of the industry. Why wouldn't a registrar get first rights to name which they have assumed management risk for IF a registrant chooses not to renew? As an individual I don't like it but understand why registrars would do so.

If we are going to complain we should also complain about Pool, snapnames et al who don't allow the public equal opportunity for drops (I"m sure Tucows will sell you their names at some point for the right price just like drop companies do) -OR- we can complain about all those evil registrants (Rick or whoever) who keep renewing names we want thus depriving the 'public' of equal opportunity to own. IMHO

There is absolutely NO logic as to why registrars should get to own or sell domains that are registered with them. They never bought the name and should not own the rights to it in any form. They SHOULD be the registrar, plain and simple. In most industries with a modicum of regulatory backbone, this would and should be considered inside trading. But that's another story, of course!

Hear, hear! Registrars are just book keepers; they have no inherent right to the names I register. Without a doubt this is a resounding conflict of interest that puts registrars at odds with the best interests of their customers. Registrar privileges should be stripped for such practices.

When unethical practices are uncovered we need to vote with our wallets and encourage others to do likewise.

I personally know Elliot Noss and I think that he is a wonderful chap who does keep things open and transparent. Let's first stop companies like eNom and GoDaddy from doing the same!

Remember the old saying -- there is no justice in this world, only power.
