Twitter has just opened their mobile website for the masses.

In case there are people that still don't know what twitter is.

Twitter.com is a huge mobile networking site where people can post their current happenings. From their computer, mobile phone, or even instant messenger. Kind of like an active mobile blog. Anyways it's following that has been developed within the last months alone is HUGE.

So anyways they just opened their mobile platform but alas it's not on .mobi. Can you believe that a Huge Web 2.0 Moblie Blog not using .mobi? How is anyone going to learn what .mobi is? How Dare THEY!

It's all about branding right?

You can post your comments about the atrocities that Twitter are doing to .mobi here.

I really had no idea a .com could do what .mobi could do. Hmm.... :upset:

isnt it obvious? anyway, there are pros and cons for them reusing the ".com"... And a .com being able to "do" what a .mobi "can do"... why not? It's just all servers, my man. Nothing special to it. Becomes the name, that is. Everything eventually still resolves to an ip address. And an routable ip address is no way restricted to just some special set of machines or whatever...

Of course it can do everything a .com can. Just like .net, .org, .info, ect. They all do the same thing but the more extentions that are worth money, the better for all domainers in my opinion. Of course .com will always be king. I have like 5 mobis but hundreds of .com's but thats not the point. A web 2.0 blog will not use mobi as web 2.0 is all about making sites that display properly no matter what kind of pc/browser/mobile device you are using.

I've been tempted to join twitter ever since I researched my twitterers.com domain, but I kind of didn't see the point. I don't want to let the world know that I just stubbed my toe, or that I just saw a red car pass by me, etc. But I can see how it can appeal to a lot of people. There are a ton of sites dedicated to twitter, and I'm sure this isn't that last we'll hear of it.

Regarding the use of .com instead of .mobi, since Twitter IS a dictionary word, it would probably cost a little bit to fight the current owner of twitter.mobi for the name, and I'm sure they wouldn't sell it cheap. Twitter is getting popular, but they are just starting, so I'm sure a $xx,xxx investment for a fledgling extension isn't in their game plan just yet.
