my local BT telephone exchnage is on the brink of being signed up to be converted from plain old dialup to spanking broadband.

its the Exchnage called LLANTRISANT (yes you need your teeth in to say it) on this link

http://www.vote4broadband.com/exchangetop40.asp

any way, is there any UKers here who are in a similar state?

how long did it take from registration to meet its targets to the exchange being "turned" on..

all the best..

and hopefully soon i will not ahve to dialup at 43k ever again...

The only problem about Broadband is that it'll cost you a "Mint" if you'll excuse the local pun!
I've had Broadband now for about 18 months - it was about 6 months coming from 1st announcement and for the 1st 9 months it was very poor service. However the last 6-9 months have been more stable and hopefully will continue like this in the future.
It is certainly different from dialup

this is the current info iam getting back

Broadband Availability Checker powered by BT
For Telephone Number 01443***** on Exchange LLANTRISANT

Sorry - broadband ADSL is not yet available in your area, but we are currently assessing demand.

We need 300 people to register their interest in buying broadband ADSL at this exchange. If 300 people register then we will begin the process to upgrade the exchange.

Our initial test on your line suggests that you may be able to have a broadband ADSL service that provides up to 512Kbps download speed, but the upstream bandwidth will vary according to the length of your telephone line. It will not be possible to provide the 1Mbps or 2Mbps broadband ADSL services.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm that your line is suitable, and if so for what speed of service.

Thank you for your interest.
--------------
i may be able to have it, thanks a lot BT..

so i wont be able to get the full speed anyway!... but they are trialing wireless where i live as its a bit out of the way..

512k is fine, I don't need anything more than that.
I am with BT Openworld and after the rocky start it has been quite good. Do you know how many have signed up with interest in your area so far?

Broadband? we are on steam power in the bridgnorth, shropshire area, B.T. say they have reduced the number of subscribers from 500 to 300 in our area to qualify them putting in broadband, so far we are about 100 short! the local council put an add in the paper saying the area would loose buisness and companies would move out of the area if we did not get broadband soon, much good that did! oh well back to boiling the kettle!
