Ultimate Search seems to be using Snapnames only now.

and melbourneIT for the odd .org

But how does Ultimate Search get the snaps first ?

[EDIT]

Maybe Ultimate Search buys snaps in bulk and snaps anything in Redemption period that looks good ............

And why does Snapnames always seem to get them better drops like France.net than for anyone else ?

Maybe Ultimate Search pays them more and they snap anything in Redemption period that looks good ............

They most SNAP them before they go to redemption period! Good ones are snapped before that! If You see it in redemption period You have probably lost the snap alrady

And I have to say it`s all in money again, if I had this kind recourses I would also take a list of names before they go to redemption period, lets say 10 days, then I would but snap`s on, then next day again so I would take list with names that have 10 days to redemption period and so on.... I would always be in advance .. I think thats how they are so much ahead!

LoL, REDEMTIONPERIOD? The good names are snapped while active! Most 2&3 letter .coms that expire THIS YEAR are snapped, even though the owner can renew for all of $10 until they expire.

Unless you have REALLY deep pockets, locking in funds with domains that are still in their "active" status might not be the most efficient way of allocating your resources. Of course, if you are only eyeing on a couple of names, that's another story.

It's probably a combination of money and "buying power". I'm sure if you go to SnapNames and say "Hey, guys, I'd like to buy 10,000 SnapBacks, what kind of price can you give me..." that the price you'd pay per SnapBack would bear absolutely no resemblence to the price you or I would pay.

So UltimateSearch probably puts speculative snaps on thousands of the most obvious domains, even if they will never drop.

Well, I think its a matter of weedling down the odds.

#1.) How GOOD is the name?
#2.) What OTHER signs are there that this may have been abandoned. (e.g. a.) Is there a website up? b.) who is the owner? c.) are other names dropping from this owner?
#3.) Other methods...

If I'm doing it on active names, I'm sure others are as well. By the time it goes into REDEMPTION, it only confirms things. Elsewise, move the Snap.

Deep pockets and/or keen instincts.

Every SnapBack back-order, whatever the retail price and whether purchased at our site directly or via one of our API partners, is sought with all of the resources at our disposal. We do not and will not apply extra resources to specific names or for certain clients in return for a higher fee.

Let's fastward to next Fall. What will Ultimate Search do
with the WLS. But, if they are tied in with Snaps will this make
them even STRONGER competitor? And, if they are winning,
then someone is losing.

There are a large number of tests one can apply to a list of "candidate" super-premium domain names to see if they have any chance of dropping in the future. While I don't want to spell out these tests here, I'll give two examples:-

1) If the domain is owned by a professional drop catcher, you can assume it is not going to drop.
2) If the domain is the main domain for a large, active site, you can assume it is not going to drop.

By applying around half a dozen or so logical tests to a group of candidate names, you can probably eliminate 80-90% of them safe in the knowledge that (with a small margin of error) you are guaranteed to be wasting your money putting speculative Snaps on them.

I believe that UltSearch and other key players have honed the process that I have hinted at above down to a fine art, such that they might (and this is just an estimate/guess here) require the equivalent of 4-5 snaps to get one super-premium name when the time comes for it to drop. In other words, they're picking up for a few hundred dollars (on average) names that are worth tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Of course, this only works if you have pockets deep enough to be working the bigger picture i.e. if you have the money and time to wait out the inevitable failures in order to find the very valuable successes...

Imagine that you start off with a list of 100,000 candidate names (not "dropping" names or "expiring" names but "clearly valuable" names) and then you process the list to whittle it down to the 10,000 most key candidates, eliminating the obvious no-hopers. Then for a few hundred thousand dollars a year (a large amount and also a very small amount - depends entirely on your perspective and available resources) you can maintain speculative snaps on the entire list, thus giving you a MASSIVE advantage at drop time.
