In a development that is expected to further spread the use of the Web in the Arab world, Internet users in the region can now register their domain names in their most preferred language, Arabic – thanks to a new service launched recently by the most popular online Arab community, Maktoob.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Onwani (www.onwani.com) is an innovative service designed to meet the demands of a growing number of Arab Internet users who seek to establish an online presence as well as surf the web in their own language, a top Maktoob.com official pointed out. “Onwani is part of our commitment to boost the spread of Arabic domain names and facilitate companies to register their domain names in both Arabic and English,” explained Samih Toukan, CEO of Maktoob.com.

Toukan pointed out that with the introduction of Onwani, Maktoob.com had once again underlined its commitment to provide the large community of Internet users with the right tools to empower them for the modern age. “In a region where people take pride in using their language, the introduction of the Onwani service will open up a world of benefits to those who had earlier refrained from surfing due to their lack of English-speaking skills,” he added. “This development further complements our mission to promote the use of Arabic language over the Internet.”

A user can download the Onwani task bar for free from the Onwani website, which allows him to type any domain name in Arabic. The corresponding website will then be made available to him. At the same time, one can also register a domain name through the Onwani service in a simple and easy-to-understand process, for a reasonable, non-refundable sum of US$30 per year.

The Onwani team will then review whether the request meets the necessary guidelines, before confirming the registration. Should a request for domain registration be rejected, the team would immediately notify the subscriber, citing the reasons for refusal.

Toukan pointed out that there were three main reasons for rejecting a request for a domain name. “Firstly, it would be refused if the domain name is already taken. Secondly, if the content of the website is found to be offensive or harmful to others, then the owner of the domain name would be warned and subsequently, his domain name would be rejected. Finally, the registration of a website would be cancelled if the subscriber did not pay his subscription charges on time,” he said.

Subscribers pay the registration charges through cashU Cards, which are easily available through shops and retailers in the region or through the website, www.cashucard.com, a safe and secure service that completely eliminates the risks of credit card fraud normally associated in online transactions. CashU Cards are then delivered to the subscriber’s doorstep. Using the Onwani service, a subscriber can register his domain name for one year or more.
