Just heard it on NPR - I have no problem whatsoever with this.

People who prey on others with drugs are the lowest of the low and are responsible for dragging down all of society.

Lock the scumbags up and let's move on.

So you're going to close down all those nicotine and alcohol factories then?

No kidding, nicotine and alcohol are equally addictive and yet socially acceptable.

I think adults should be free to put whatever substances they wish into their own bodies... it's their life to wreck however they want. Having the government meddle in people's private lives to "save them from themselves" is totalitarian. Legalize Freedom: Vote Libertarian! (But this is getting way off topic here.)

The items either are legal, or not. It is a matter of local enforcement, not some ATF effort.

"Smoking tobacco through a waterpipe greatly reduces the risk of lung cancer" statement from the American Surgeon General 1964

Additionally:

Surely they have the publics health in mind.

Next round up all the bartenders, bar owners, beer distributors and the drinkers. We're gonna jail em all.

Confiscate the beer mugs, shot glasses, beer, wine and booze.

Party on,

Personally, I would like to see tobacco included on the list of illegal drugs. I realize that won't happen anytime soon, mostly because it is such a big part of our economy, but I think it is a major drain on other parts of the economy (health care) and it deserves to be controlled.

I would support a measure to phase it out over 20 years, giving everyone who is currently addicted time to quit or die, and gradually raising the legal age of consent so new addicts cannot be legally created. This approach would also give all of the tobacco farmers time to phase in new crops.

I would like to live in a smoke-free country in my lifetime, and I would support politicians who would work toward that goal. If this falls under the category of "government meddling" then so be it. The government meddles in our lives in many more subversive and destructive ways than this. At least this meddling would have a positive end goal.

I see nothing wrong with smokin a little weed now and then, Crack is a no-no. I am sure more people have died due to smoking cigs and drinking.

If they think this will stop anyone from using weed they are WRONG :)

Just go to the hardware store in the plumbing section and build your own pipe, cig tubes do work, a plastic pepsi bottle with a hole in it and some tin-foil.

This is not an issue of people selling drugs, they are selling pipes.

The same logic could be used to raid gun stores and close them down. After all, guns can be used to commit crimes.

I guess all of you that support this attack on U.S. freedoms also agree that all gun stores should be shut down as well?

What they did is anti American and unconstitutional.

Where to next?

Porn sites?

Abortion Info sites?

Ashcroft is ripping your consitution to shreds (and covering nude statues while he does it).

You Yanks need to get PATRIOTIC NOW. And I don't mean for your Government, I mean for your LIBERTY - or what's left of it.

U nailed it Drewbert.

And the new "Patriot Act" proposed by Ashcroft and company makes the Constitution a faded piece of American history that is no more than a fancy paper hanging on the wall.
"Let's save our civil liberties by giving them up"

Check out the ACLU's write up on what kinds of goodies are in the new "Patriot Act":

The city of Richmond California unanomously voted to oppose the first Patriot Act because it violated the civil liberties and rights of it's citizens:
