I think I have found most of the worthwhile .US new regs I am going to find, but I did have to take my first 3-number domain tonight:

997.us

It's not one I picked at random. I was reading and looking an pictures of Porsche's long awaited replacement for the classic 911. It is coming out in summer 2004 and the new model number will be - you guessed it - the 997. The number has already been taken in all other extensions. With the huge Porsche market in the .US I was surprised a car fan had not already grabbed it. About the time the 997 comes out US should have some familiarity among the public and hopefully make this a nice investment for an $8 reg fee.

Duke - I see some good sites out there for Classic American muscle cars. SS396.com, Z28.com, and others.

I would also try for 997porsche.us if it's available.

911porsche.com has an interesting site. They are selling tickets to win an '03 911 Porsche Turbo. Tickets are $150 a pop, and the car will be awarded after all 2500 tickets are sold.

That sort of nets the site about $375,000 to buy the car with, nice. Delivery included, I guess you have to factor in the extras.

It seems these '03 models are available for the bargain basement price of $170,000 and change. If you really need to finance it, that will be $4,964/month please, cha-ching

The prize winner is picked with a "non-linear additive feedback random number generator."

This is the $5 word for a number picker, available on most Unix systems, a little better than picking a winner out of a hat I guess.

There's your answer of what to do with the site. Sell tickets, and when the 997 comes out in '04, you should have just about sold all 2500 tickets. You'll have enough for a winner car, and one for yourself.

I will be sure to play these numbers in the Il. state lottery!

"997.us" $0.50USD@straight bet=$250
"9153.com" '' '' =$2500
"9503.com"

Every time they hit I'll post the number.

Interesting idea Dave, but I never reg domains with TM names in them. As soon as you put Porsche in the title you're inviting trouble.

That lottery site looks to me like it could be a major scam. I notice it just went up 2 weeks ago and they are apparently not affiliated with Porsche in any way. They say they won't give the car away until they sell 2500 tickets at $150 a pop. The drawing would never have to take place if they don't sell all of the tickets - meanwhile they have your money. I can see them heading out with all of the cash and no one getting a car - nothing at all in place to stop them. I also thought there was a federal law against running a lottery that required a purchase to enter.

I'll keep an eye on that one. If you could legally do what they are doing - it would be a pretty sweet arrangement (for the person running the contest!)

997.us is sure to be sought after by the UAW Amalgamated Local 997 now at the less desirable http://www.uaw997.org/

The popular Magazyn Kryminalny is now forced to use the bizarre url http://www.lodz.tvp.com.pl/997/ for its 997 show.

The New York City Housing Police Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #997 uses a lowly tripod account at http://members.tripod.com/HPDFOP/ and is drooling for the 997.us site.

Most importantly, pictures and details of the New Porsche 997 coming in summer 2004 are all but lost at http://www.imakenews.com/autospies/e_article000105077.cfm

Yes, 997.US is a great name – just drive it away.

Good luck.

OK, this Porsche thing has my interest.

I overlooked the fact that there are actually more prizes.

Yes Gwendolyn, that's right, a 2nd prize of 10K, and 5 3rd prizes of $1k each.

So, lets see here. Each ticket has a 1 in 7 chance of winning the car. Wow, those odds are looking pretty slim.

Looks like there are a few "gotchas" in the fine print here.

"§8 User acknowledges that full freedom from errors or incompleteness is impossible to achieve with respect to computer software. Should User become aware that the software contains such error or incompleteness User undertakes to refrain from taking any advantage whatsoever thereof. Moreover, promptly upon becoming aware of such error or incompleteness User shall notify the Company in writing."

Whatever happened to that "non-linear additive feedback random number generator??"

"§9 To maintain a high level of security to protect the User's funds, the Company performs random security checks. The User hereby accepts that the Company maintains the right to demand additional documentation in order to verify the User in the event of a security check."

Like doing credit checks and asking for SSN, Visa, subordinated debentures acct., 401K, etc.

"§10 Any dispute arising out of or relating to the Members Prize Draw, prizes, web site, client application, 911Porsche.com, eSoftSystems, Cybernet Marketing Ltd, and/or FMS Antigua Ltd. shall be governed by the laws of Antigua & Barbuda, excluding choice of law principles. "

That choice of venue for legal issues sure gives me a lot of confidence.

What's this, the domain is regged in Antigua?

Registrant:
Media35
Temple Street
n/a
n/a
St Johns, St Johns W1
AG
1111

That means that even Porsche would have a hard time asserting TM, even with a UDRP win.

Does this bring to mind the .USA registration scam awhile back? They were also bound by the laws of a one coconut tree island nation, and look what they got away with.

This phony offer should be circulated to Porsche owners clubs, Porsche DE, www.netscalped.com, www.internationalscams.com, www.scambusters.org and of course, the Antigua Better Business Bureau.

Does the new Porsche 997 look anything like the Mini Cooper 997?
