This might be helpgul instead of the user to user praise as you can get more detailed information about the person you are dealing with. Seems to work for ebay pretty well.

Buy / Sell / Trade User Rating System (aka eBay Style User Feedback Hack)

Description:
This is a rating system for when members buy / sell /trade items from each other. It is based on the honor system since there is no way to truly tell if they did engage in a transaction. However I created this system because it was a pain to try and maintain a single thread listing good / bad traders and so far has worked out quite well.

Key Features:
- Rate Member Positive/Negative/Neutral
- Specify Buyer, Seller, or Trade
- Leave comments about the deal
- Records date when rating created
- Specify a URL to the deal
- Admins & Super Mods can delete ratings (just incase)
- Pagination (Just for Mist )

Could be a good thing, but one of the problems is that many big-ticket buyers and sellers are not comfortable in sharing those transaction details with the rest of the world, therefore skewing the ratings to petty sales.

Agreed. There are lots of other ways a rating system can be manipulated too. We tried to implement different kinds of programs before but nothing could satisfy the majority of users. eBay has millions of people and they need some sort of program like that - but DNF is very small compared to eBay - and most of us know each other. When new members do come in - they don't have to look far to see the type of person they are dealing with - and we don't have to wait long to see the type of person they are. Plus anybody can always ask one of the mods - or long time members about somebody else - on the rare occasion they can't find info on another person themselves.

I like the fact that we are a self policing type community. When somebody rips another person off - it's very obvious and the members here get involved. A crook won't last long at DNF - and it's been proven many times before. I think that's something that we can all be proud of.
