Personally, I've grown tired of dealing with hair-brained idiots trying to scam, scheme, pilfer, steal, and freeload when it comes to domains. Having had my identity stolen in the past, I've taken several measures to prevent my identity and my domains from being compromised in the future. One of these measures was buying an IronKey.

https://www.ironkey.com/technology

I like the security the device offers. Additionally, its handy for safe and secure data transport since I file my taxes online but I keep all of my accounting information on a computer that will never see the internet (I install updates remotely). In this day and age, I think its a good idea to employ ever measure of protection you can. This is especially true when you have domains worth x,xxx or more each.

Has anyone else thought about this or put it to use? It seems like a good idea.

Hey, I've just realised that no one has tried to scam my domains from me. Maybe that should have told me something about my portfolio. :)

How is an ironkey going to protect you from scammers exactly? I work in network security for a large company and maybe I'm missing your point. If you are afraid of losing the data you have on a thumb drive buy a regular thumb drive and use TrueCrypt, it is a much cheaper solution.

If you want to protect your laptop think about using a full disk encryption solution (Pointsec) or Bitlocker. Macs/Linux have the ability to encrypt your data as well.

As for protecting passwords and such I use Keepass (www.keepass.com). Use random passwords for every account you have that are autogenerated in KeePass and have 16 characters. I don't even know my passwords anymore because I use keepass. I also backup my machine using www.backblaze.com and my own encryption key.

To protect yourself on the web don't go to shady websites, get a mac/linux box or use a virtualization product within windows to do your web surfing.
