About a year or two ago I owned xmastoys.com. I couldn't sell the name anywhere for even $100. i let the domain expire.

I just found out it was sold on auction for $4500

People are stupid (including me)

End of Rant

It happens to all of us. I see my domains dropping and goig to auction, some fetching mid to high $xxx range yet I couldn't even sell them for $5 before they dropped. :(

The question is - did it really sell at that price (non paying bidder etc..)?

xmastoys.com? Wish I would have seen that for sale here, I would have snapped it up with the quickness.

Think that's the problem though, you post a for sale thread and the damn thing is 3 pages back before it's even received 35 views.

There are other factors that come into play. Usually the buyers at auction have more money to spend and are willing to develop the domains whereas the users on forums are mostly buying domains just to resellt hem.

I am surprised that made it through the sales threads without a sale or offer, did it get any traffic?

Well you're not the first this has happened to. If you're in domaining long enough you'll see names you dropped or sold, sell for more down the road. It is a big world out there and it's impossible to reach every possible end user, or know when they'll even come along.

Don't feel bad, Cowboys.com cost $375 G's to buy and it's sitting there for 2 years gathering dust.

Business Idea: Create a registrar that splits the auction proceeds between the previous domain owner and the registrar in the event that it is not renewed or no longer wanted. The market would liquidate portfolios overnight instead of allowing us to lose out completely on a domain we have been holding on to for a long time with the hope of selling or developing. I certainly think that most domainers would move entire portfolios over to such a registrar and it would directly increase new registrations.

Fabulous!
I found the email sent 9/1/09
"You will received 60% of the final sales prices (minus the renewal fee) for all domain names sold through this service"

I have many, many times sold domains for $xxxx that I failed to sell here for $xx.... in fact there are TWO in escrow right now from my December 2009 sale list. That's why I rarely bother posting domains for sale in the forums anymore.

Then where do you sell them? I haven't had any luck at sedo or afternic, or even contacting end users

Why is that anyway?

I have also noticed it. Can't give them away here for $XX or as low as $10 but they easily sell as a drop for at least $60 or a lot more.

The old debate as to why the go for more on a drop lol

Basically when you mix lazy, wealthy and uneducated buyers in an auction setting you tend to get crazy results.

The last 1 year or so you know see these big groups selling off names agressively and some for a loss, quite a few for a loss. The easy way was the stupid way and now they pay. A lot of slow sinking ships. One day we'll look back at all these drop prices and instead of saying they had foresight the last 3 years we'll see how stupid and lazy they were.. oh and poorer.

What you need is some kind of database that would pull domains off forums that are for sale each day and list them by age, traffic, keyword. then you could get more people buying on forums. its too 'all over the place' and eats up too much time looking through threads constantly for deals. even then, dealing with individuals, you never know what you are getting into. i am waiting over a month now to get a domain from someone who agreed to sell it to me. with drops you don't have that problem.

the demographics on forums, aftermarket / drop auction sites and live conferences are different, a lot different... apples and oranges

that is why some domains will sell for exponentially higher on the last 2, doh ! :)

Ive gheard this excuse before and have to say it is no excuse for bad business and that is exactly what has gone on for years now, bad business. The software idea to pull names is good though lol

But really if you can spend thousands a day/week/month OVER reseller value on names you can hire a guy/gal at $35k a year who knows there stuff and save yourself 6-7 figs a year. There is NO excuse for the stupidity that goes on at a drop. Not all buyers mind you but generally when you see those $XX-$XXX names go for thousands the buyer is usually one we all know. It's as if once you reach a certain status you no longer have to practice good business.
