I have always liked this TLD (.web) but it never seems to get approved. http://www.webtld.com/

Now that ICANN has voted for new extentions, do you think .web will finally be approved, and could it maybe take over .com?

Why do we need .web when we have .net?

It won't overtake .com, but I could see it being a solid TLD in the long term. My portfolio is exclusively .com based, but I would buy .web domains for development. I can't stand niche TLD's like .info, .net, .org, .mobi, .biz, etc. The .web would be inclusive towards any development project, so hence the appeal for me personally.

How is .net more niche than .web?

.net was initially intended to be used only for the computers of network providers, and in certain web circles that association still lingers.

The Internet consists of a wide array of services like E-mail, FTP, IRC, newsgroups, the World Wide Web so .web looks restrictive. Seriously, what's the point of .web ?
Or do you want domains that are only good for websites and cannot be used for E-mail for example ?
Maybe you'll like .tel then ;)

I fail to see why .web would be any more popular than .info or .biz

It would probably have more success than some TLDs for various reasons (.asia/.travel being too niche, .biz being too unprofessional) so would be another .net, just not as popular and no where near the value.

The reason I think .web might be popular. When some one talks about the Internet, they will call it the Internet, Network or the web.

Little doubt if approved .web could easily be the #2 extension behind com in the future.

Can't think of a more natural and better ext than dot-web

I agree, World Wide Web is an extremely narrow niche. To balance the .web TLD, they would most certainly have to launch .offline, .telepathy, and .? for people that just aren't sure.
