Weird letter in the mail

Hiya,

I received a letter yesterday. It wasn't from an attn. office, but some business 'claiming' that their 'client' previously owned the domain and it was 'copywrited' under UCC 17, and they want it back before they pursue 'legal action'.

I've never been the one to spook so they will have to come at me with more than some business saying 'give it back'.

I bought this domain fairly, waited for it to go through the delete process and then registered it. This company is notifiying me 2 months after the fact. Something smells funny to me.

First off, domain names usually have little to do copyright law. And are you sure "copywrited" is not your typo but theirs. If so, then you may throw that letter away esp. when it's not a registered mail.

Dear Ms. Me

I am writing to inform you that the xxxxx.com which you registered in July of 2004 was the URL of my clients for several years and copyrighted as theirs under the United States Code title 17. This was used in their prescriptions for successs material and works. Please contact me as soon as possible so that we may avoid unnecessary legal action in retriveing this URL back.

It's not written on a real letterhead and not a registered letter. So, I figure it to be a blowhard.

Like I said, domain names are rarely (if not never) related to copyright law which usually does not apply to names and short phrases. (Trademarks do, on the other hand.) So when these amateurs can't even figure that difference out, I'd say you are pretty safe, at least for now. I usually don't respond to such threats (I get A LOT) at all. And when they come with a lawyer, I'll take it to MY lawyer. Hope this helps.
