As most on here know by now I own a certain domain, JesusChri.st, and apart from a continual stream of low ball offers I have not had much luck with it - I even had to take down the NKJV of the Bible that I put on it - I never even contemplated that the Bible could be copyrighted! :sigh2:

Well I keep going back to the domain and seeing if I feel like developing it again and I don't, I am not a religious person so there is no philanthropic drive to develop it. On top of that I am now up to my eyes in another two development projects that are each to say the least full-time occupations.

So I have been contemplating putting the domain on eBay and hitting the press and TV hard with emails about the sale to reporters, a few phone calls, etc..

Now my reason for supposing that this domain 'might' do well on eBay is the amount of public interest that could possibly be instigated by the press if they took the story up. After all could you imagine the headlines "Jesus Christ being sold on eBay!", "Who will own Jesus Christ on the internet?", "What is Jesus Christ worth?", etc.. I mean the possibilities are endless and if taken up by the press, well..............

Any thoughts on this would really be appreciated.

'Tis the season ...

But I've never had ANY luck on Ebay in 10 years of selling there. The only reason I occasionally advertise there is to bring potential buyers to my own websites.

Honestly, If it was Jesuschrist.com I would agree that ebay would be a good place for it as I think the news would pick up that story...not sure about a hack version of it...I think it is pretty cool...just not sure about mainstream media....may be worth a shot though as it will not cost too much.

Thanks BellC and Onward.

When I developed the domain with the NKJV of the Bible it became more popular in a few weeks than JesusChrist.com, Jesus.com, and Christ.com. If it had not been for the copyright issue and having to take the work off I am sure by now it would have been challenging even Bible.org, but 'if's' are no good in domaining!

More views would be appreciated.

Is there anyone else out there that has had success marketing and selling a domain on eBay?

The KJV has no copyright, use that bible.

I never had any success with eBay myself. Seems you need some sort of vehicle to promote on eBay or it gets lost in the shuffle.

Careful ...look at what happened to the Beatles when they said that.

Some people sold domains at xxxxx range at ebay.

But they are costly if you put reserve.

Acro, I tried but as I am a not religious that just, well........ I have no real interest in the domain now, and that is not what is needed when developing such a site.

Onward, they each became multi-millionaires! Now if only I could sing or write music, then....

The reason I was thinking of eBay was the sheer potential of getting the domain out to a huge market, plus as I said the potential to try and market via the press and tv to potential end-users. I have tried contacting televangelists, major churches and ministries, etc., but get stuck with someone after a donation from me, that is if I even get that far.

This is the time when I wish I had spent more time networking rather than being a loner.

James, yes I think there may be a cost, and that is why it would have to be done as a campaign to increase chances of a sale rather than just listing the domain for sale.

Please keep your thoughts coming in, all are appreciated.

Personally i don't think domains should be sold on ebay. I think most use it as a way to drive traffic to their names. The ones that sell on ebay are usually lower quality.

768768 - Thomas Nelson Inc hold the copyright and it was there Mr. John R. Jacobson, the litigation counsel who acted on their behalf. I took legal advice as I doubted the validity of a claim to copyright on the Bible - unfortunately though it is just like any other material and the copyright is sound.

Investor - Yes, your point is well taken. I am just at a loss of how to get the domain noticed by end-users (Churches, Ministries, televangelists, etc.) - the idea of utilizing eBay as a public noticeboard appeals because the unusual are often noted. Unfortunately at the moment there seems to be little alternative, domainers have little use for hacked domain names because they require development - and my heart really isn't into developing this one again (I am not religious). I do have some scruples though and refuse to turn it into a porn site as several people have suggested in the past, I have considered it but it is just not me.

I have looked into eBay listings and it would cost relatively little to list the domain even at a realistic starting price, and if, and that is one almighty 'if', the press picked up on it then the domain could really take off.

I really do appreciate all the input that has been offered, the decision obviously has to be mine. The thoughts offered by members are invaluable as it allows me to gain valued outside input into the situation that would normally be lacking working individually as we all tend to do.

As said previously any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Its better to buy on ebay than to sell. Most buyers on ebay want a steal of a deal plus the costs of selling a domain there are outrageous IMO. Take it from someone who has bought and sold domains there find somewhere else.

Thanks bd77.

Indeed thanks to all who offered advice. I have today received an email suggesting another possible route for the sale which I find much more attractive than the eBay route and still the possibility of creating press interest in the domain so I will see whether that idea can be developed.

I must admit that my feelings have always been on the side of caution when contemplating selling on eBay, but the idea had to be considered.

Again many thanks to all of those who gave their time and experience to offer advice, it is much appreciated.
