What’s your favourite new domain extension? And why? And which one do you thinks got the most potential in terms of investment.

I personally am not two keen on .ws names, I don’t mind .biz but my favourite has to be .info (seems to be popular?)

Looking forward to the release of the .eu (seems to be a lot of interest, anyone know the release date?)

Thanks

IceMan,

I guess you don't like "net"?

80% of mine are .com and .net

.org are about 10% to 15%

The rest are .cn or .com.cn (and .net.cn)

And, a couple .us and .biz

About 25% of my names have been loaded onto my
new site

www.TheNamesStore.com

Once, we complete the setup of the site. We will load
more names.

My bet is

.US

Relative low entry cost with a high potential % return on investment.

I have to agree with Stocdoc - .us is very popular these days - Anyone have a guess as to where .la will go? So far more than 10,000 registrations since May - .la used to be the country code for Laos - it was sold and has become the new extension for Los Angeles. Will we see .ny (New York) next?

It's difficult to say what your favorite extension is unless you specify in what context you see it in.

Best-of-breed for country specific sites :-

1. .US
2. .CN
3. .DE

Best-of-breed for general B2C sites :-

1. .COM

Best-of-breed for B2B sites :-

1. .BIZ

Best-of-breed for non-profit sites :-

1. .ORG

Best-of-breed for specialist information sharing sites :-

1. .INFO

Best new TLD entrant :-

1. .EU (ETA Q4 03/Q1 04)

I like all of the above extensions, but my suspicion is that .BIZ is a sleeper in an emerging B2B internet segment and a lot more valuable than many people want to imagine.

Mole what are your thoughts on .la - Are we seeing a trend towards city extensions or not?

I doubt ICANN will approve that, viv. But I guess you could try to do 3LD domains to simulate that situation eg. ___.la.com

My favorite "picks" (in no order of preference) are based on pure development capabilities.

1) .biz - Fits certain business models extremely well. I own three .biz names: Canoe.biz, Anywhere.biz, Protection.biz

2) .ws - Generic "keyword" development in this name-space is key here. Marketing them will include using the "ws" portion of the domain (Domain Optimization) in the "Title" of the site. I own: www.Database.ws (Database Web Servicesâ„¢), www.Retirement.ws ($$$), www.Cigar.ws (sweet!), www.Politics.ws (2004???), www.Nano.ws (Nano Weapon Systems), www.Union.ws, www.Father.ws (Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask), www.Complaint.ws (%$#%@!!), www.Wear.ws (Wear Wirelessâ„¢), www.SocialSecurity.ws (Does SS pay for my prescription benefits!

3) .us - Fits the US market really well. I own three, "mysirname.us", Juggle.us, Algebra.us

NOTE: One common theme throughout is that most of these names are "generic" with the exception being "mysirname.us". To me, I think the important thing to remember about "domain names" is that they were designed to help people remember the URL address. Since most people think of the ".com" version of your name first when going to a site, I think it's imperative to really "stand out". Isn't that what marketing is all about?

#1. [.COM]

2. [.ORG]
3. [.NET] --DISTANT third
4. [.INFO] --OK for certain applications such as medical
5. [.US] --great for certain geographic applications
6. [.DE] --seems to hold its own

None of the other extensions are even on the radar screen.

Although, there are a handful of short or prime adult terms in ANY domain extension which could be valueable.

Why would anyone want to use the ".com" in their name? It's so "unprofessional" (1995)

If only I could go back to 1993 and register Sex.com for $100.

izopodian philosophy: Some people think the solution to prevent human error are computers. I would agree, however who do you think created the "CPU" that runs the computer??

The best prevention of human error is to make damn sure the stuff that gets "entered" into the "human" CPU is only the best material. You can't ever go wrong by starting with a good book!

Fess up cow, how many .COM domains do you own? You wouldn't want to contradict yourself and your financial investment, would you? Nah, I guess not.

Mole---Aren't we all a little biased here by the portfolio we carry?

For some ".biz" does blow. Like anything else you "vote" with your wallet. I'm sure there are some who are kicking themselves for buying Pets.com stock as opposed to eBay.com stock when they had the chance.

izopodian philophy: Diversity in your portfolio will ensure you can continue to "play" the game. If you're not in the "game" then you are probaly aren't making any money.

My suggestion to everyone is to not leave this extension out of your portfolio, even if it does blow... Even better would be if you actually developed some of them. ;)
