Looking to get a new permanent personal email address and am trying to see what people prefer.

Gmail? Hotmail? Domain/Website that you own? In this case, do you use contact@ info@ or yourname@?

This is for non-business related issues.

Very interested to see in what you guys have to say.

[email protected] is the best for personal e-mails IMO. I've never been a fan of web-based e-mail services.

I use gmail but got [email protected] redirect to gmail and gmail offers an option to post from that email address.

I think gmail offers better security than others.

I use Google Apps mail with my domain name.

It has the power of Gmail and the brand of mine.

I have a gMail account I use for my main contact (friends, family, online merchant, WhoIs contact). I do NOT use it for registrar to client contact, though.

I use one of my own domains, SSL connection to the mail server, McAffee Secure scanning daily on the server, and create a new email address for everyone I contact, except close friends and close business colleagues with whom I work daily.
That way I also immediately see what the source of spam is, and only need to disable a single email address if needed.

I have my own domain names and I host them on my servers.
I have all my family names in .com.
Avoid free webmails like hotmail, even for personal use IMO. They are not secure, often legitimate mail is trapped as spam and service could be terminated/change at any time. One problem is that often you cannot even import your messages unless you have POP3 access.

[email protected]

Reg it for ten years and never worry about changes to your provider etc.

Get an email host (like GD). Decent rates, easy to use interface, 10 boxes, 10gb each.

My wife and I recently went through a change from Alltel selling out to Windstream. I figured if I had to make change notice with all my contacts, I would do it and do it once and never have to worry about it. It was a huge hassle to send notices to peeps in our address book that had built up over about 10 years.

It is well worth the time, effort, and expense to use a domain you like and can live with. That way you will never have to deal with the time, expense, and frustration my wife and I did thanks to the buy out. Unquestionably, I am sure we missed many contacts that were never updated.

Pick one and use it and renew it in advance for ten years.

Providing email service to my client is one of my business. I am using Google Apps Premium Edition for email 25GB, great anti-spam anti-virus, etc.

It's great to use a business tool e.g. your own email for example [email protected]

If you need assistance to setup your own Google Apps Standard or Premium, let me know. Send email to em @ king.net or visit http://www.moscom.com/apps for more information.

regards,
Em
